한인총회 임원들이 드리는 편지 (10/06/2020) |
우리의 명절 한가위를 즈음하여 그리스도의 사랑으로 문안 드립니다.
“한가위만 같아라” 라는 말이 있습니다. 모든 것이 풍성한 계절에 가족 모두가 만날 수 있는 즐거운 날이 매일같이 이루어지기를 바라는 마음이 담겨 있다고 합니다. 그러나 올해는 펜데믹으로 인한 여러 어려움으로 인해 여느 때와 같은 마음이지 못해 안타까움이 큽니다. 그러나 언제나 긍휼과은혜에 풍성하신 그리스도의 평강이 사랑하는 한인 연합감리교회 모든 성도님들과 목회자님들 가정에 함께 하실 줄로 믿습니다.
이미 경험하고 계신 것처럼, 우리는 지금 유례없이 다방면으로 어렵고 혼란한 때를 지나고 있습니다. 펜데믹으로 인한 건강과 생계의 위협은 물론, 이미 수개월째 지속되고 있는 비대면 예배와 모임제한으로 인해 많은 교회들이 경제적, 정서적, 영적으로 큰 어려움과 고통을 호소하고 있습니다. 거기에 더하여, 우리는 신학적, 신앙고백적 차이로 인해 연합감리교단의 미래를 걱정해야 하는 형편에도 처해 있습니다.
이러한 때에 저희 한인 총회 임원들이 모여 마음을 나누고 지혜를 구하는 중에 주께서 부어주신 두가지 마음을 여러분들과 함께 나누고 기도를 부탁드리고자 합니다.
하나는, ‘진정한 감리교인(A Real Methodist)’의 모습을 회복하는 것입니다.
감리교인을 감리교인 답게 하는 중요한 특징 중 하나는 ‘열린 마음(open heart)’입니다. 그리스도안에서 취하는 ‘열린 마음’은 나의 소신이나 신앙을 포기하는 것이 아닙니다. “나의 경험과 생각이미치지 못한 다른 환경과 영역 안에서도 하나님은 일하실 수 있다”는 겸손함 그리고 하나님의 주권을 인정하는 마음에서 흘러나오는 자연스러운 마음입니다. 그리고 그것은 나와 다른 생각을 가진 사람들을 향한 경청과 존중 그리고 진실한 기도로 드러납니다.
또 다른 하나는, 초대교회 성도들의 성숙한 자세를 본받는 일입니다.
엄밀히 말해, 초대교회가 이상적인 교회는 아니었습니다. 오히려 교회의 탄생 이후 처음 경험하는온갖 종류의 미숙하고 심각한 문제들이 교회의 안팎은 물론, 선교의 과정에서도 수없이 쏟아져 나왔습니다. 그러나 우리 신앙의 선배들이 그 문제들을 지혜롭게 해결해 갔다는 점에서 본 받을 만합니다. 그들이 취한 최고의 지혜이자 해결책은 먼저 ‘말씀과 기도’를 생명처럼 붙드는 일이었습니다. 단지, 골치 아픈 현안들을 미뤄 놓거나 회피하기 위함이 아니었습니다. 혼란함 속에서 더더욱 하나님의 마음이 무엇일지 섣불리 판단하지 않기 위해서였고, 혹은 시간이 걸리더라도 오직 그안에서만 방향을 바로 잡을 수 있음을 알았기 때문이리라 믿습니다.
어쩌면, 대책 없는 원론적인 이야기로만 들리실지도 모르겠습니다. 그러나 우리가 그동안 경험해왔듯, 가장 훌륭하고 완벽한 대책은 늘 하나님께서 세우시고 진행하셨습니다. 하나님을 위한다는사람의 지혜는 늘 미숙하여 공동체에 상처를 주거나 더 큰 문제를 야기할 때가 많았습니다. 그리고우리의 최선은 주님의 마음을 구하며 ‘말씀과 기도’ 안에서 겸손과 경청의 자리를 지키는 일이었다고 믿습니다. 이번에도 우리 온 교회들이 그 자리를 함께 지켜내며 주님의 인도하심을 구하는 일에 동참해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 주께서는 그것을 ‘행함 있는 믿음’의 고백으로 받으시고 긍휼과 은혜를 베푸실 것을 믿습니다. 아래 기도제목을 위해 온 교회와 성도들이 모일 때마다 한 마음으로 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.
1 펜데믹으로 인해 고통 중에 있는 성도님들과 목회자들에게 하늘의 위로와 평강,그리고도우심의 손길이 임하도록
2 연합감리교단은 물론, 한인연합감리교회 성도들과 목회자들 모두가 진정한 감리교인의모습을 회복할 수 있도록
3 성도들과 목회자들의 삶과 가정에서 ‘말씀과 기도’의 부흥이 일어나도록
비록 문제는 여전할지라도, 흔들림 없는 그리스도의 평강을 경험하는 우리 모든 교회들이 되어 ‘오늘만 같아라’ 라는 영적 한가위 명절을 날마다 경험하실 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축복합니다.

Happy Chuseok! The traditional Korean celebration of Chuseok comes with abundant food and quality family time, just like Thanksgiving, and we often wish that each day is blessed like Chuseok. This wish may not be practical in our unprecedented times given that we have not been able to gather in person, which has led to physical, financial, and spiritual hardship.
Yet, we write this letter with the hope that we may still experience the abundance of Chuseok in this challenging time. We are still in the pandemic. Our concerns for the future of the United Methodist Church have not disappeared. Hence, we would like to take this opportunity to share our stance and ask for prayers.
Let us begin by sharing with you two aspects of where we stand as the Korean Association of the United Methodist Church, especially with regards to the future of the Church. First, we will strive to be “real Methodists.” These are not just words; rather, this is our commitment to being humble and open hearted as a representative body in this time. We trust that God is before us and will work in amazing ways beyond our experience and expectations. With this in mind, we will wait patiently with prayers and will continue to listen to the Holy Spirit and the voices of people from different perspectives. Second, we will imitate the mature attitude of the early church members. While the early church may not have had ideal conditions in that they experienced confusion and challenges both from within and without, they continued to grow and find ways to be a church. They did so by holding on to the Word and prayer. This prevented them from taking any premature actions.
In times like this, we find that listening to each other and waiting for what will come is essential to our work. This waiting is not a passive act but our “act of faith” that God is with us and that we will patiently and will diligently be the church throughout the challenges. And we ask that you join us in this spirit and pray for the following.
Let us pray for the United Methodist Church family members – who may be experiencing hardship due to the pandemic to be filled with God’s grace and peace, – to remember and act upon being a Methodist and to receive the love of God with open hearts, and – to revive the essence of Christianity, the Word and prayer, in our daily life.
While the Chuseok experience may have been different this year, our wish and blessings for abundance and quality family time has not gone away. We pray for God’s abundance for you and your church family.
