Overflowing Living Water
Hymn: # 438 Since Christ My Soul From Sin Set Free
Scripture: John 4:13–15
Key Verse: “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (Verse 14)
At Jacob’s Well, Jesus makes a startling declaration to the Samaritan woman He encounters there. He explains that the water the world offers—the water drawn from the wells of success, relationships, and material possessions for which we thirst—provides relief only for the moment of drinking, leaving us thirsty once again. In contrast, the water Jesus gives resolves our thirst forever. A crucial point to note here is that this water is not supplied from an external source; rather, it begins to well up *from within* the one who believes in Jesus. This is precisely the paradoxical abundance of the Gospel—the grace of “Overflow.”
To quench her thirst, the Samaritan woman had wandered from one husband to another; seeking to avoid the prying eyes of others, she approached the well under the scorching midday sun. Her life was defined by constant deprivation and filled with an unquenchable thirst.
However, after meeting Jesus, a spring of eternal life—one that no longer needed to beg for fulfillment from external circumstances—burst forth from deep within her. The season of Lent is a time for us to acknowledge the spiritual drought within our own souls. Are we, perhaps, still engaged in the futile labor of repeatedly lowering our buckets into the world’s wells—wells from which we are inevitably destined to thirst again?
True self-care is not found in striving to fill our inner emptiness with the things of the world, but rather in turning toward Jesus Christ—the very Source of Life who dwells within us. The living water the Lord gives is not a fleeting joy enjoyed merely because circumstances have improved. It is the power of life that springs up ceaselessly—even in the very midst of suffering and the wilderness-like realities of life—refreshing me and flowing beyond me to overflow into the lives of my neighbors.
Today, let us engage in deep fellowship with the Lord so that the living water within us never runs dry. When the Lord dwells within us, we can boldly declare, in the face of any thirst: “My cup overflows.”
Devotional Questions: What are the “wells” of the world that I repeatedly seek out today in an attempt to quench my thirst? To whom should the joy of the Lord, springing up within me, flow out and overflow today?
Prayer: O God, forgive the foolishness of seeking to quench my thirst at the wells of the world; instead, fill our souls solely with the eternal living water that You provide. May the grace springing up within me overflow, making me a blessed channel that brings life to my neighbors. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

넘쳐흐르는 생수

예수님은 야곱의 우물가에서 만난 사마리아 여인에게 충격적인 선언을 하십니다. 세상이 주는 물, 즉 우리가 목말라 하는 성공, 관계, 소유의 우물물은 마실 때뿐이며 다시 목마르게 되지만, 예수님이 주시는 물은 영원히 갈증을 해결해 준다는 것입니다. 여기서 주목할 점은 그 물이 외부에서 공급되는 것이 아니라, 예수를 믿는 자의 ‘그 속에서’ 솟아나기 시작한다는 사실입니다. 이것이 바로 복음의 역설적인 풍요함, 즉 ‘Overflow’(넘쳐흐름)의 은혜입니다.
사마리아 여인은 자신의 목마름을 해결하기 위해 여러 남편을 찾아 헤맸고, 사람들의 시선을 피해 뙤약볕 아래 우물을 찾았습니다. 그녀의 삶은 늘 결핍이었고, 채워지지 않는 갈증으로 가득했습니다.
그러나 예수님을 만난 후 그녀의 내면에는 더 이상 외부의 조건에 구걸하지 않아도 되는 영생의 샘물이 터져 나왔습니다. 사순절은 우리 내면의 가뭄을 확인하는 시간입니다. 우리는 혹시 여전히 ‘다시 목마를 수밖에 없는’ 세상의 우물가에서 헛된 두레박질을 반복하고 있지는 않습니까?
진정한 자기 돌봄은 내 안의 결핍을 세상의 것으로 채우려 애쓰는 것이 아니라, 내 안에 계신 생명의 근원 예수 그리스도께로 나아가는 것입니다. 주님이 주시는 생수는 환경이 좋아져서 누리는 일시적인 기쁨이 아닙니다. 고난과 광야 같은 삶의 현장 한복판에서도 끊임없이 솟아나 나를 적시고, 나를 넘어 이웃에게까지 흘러가는(Overflow) 생명의 능력입니다.
오늘 하루, 내 안의 생수가 메마르지 않도록 주님과 깊이 교제합시다. 주님이 내 안에 거하실 때, 우리는 어떤 갈증 앞에서도 당당히 “내 잔이 넘치나이다.”라고 고백할 수 있습니다.
묵상질문: 오늘 내가 반복해서 목말라하며 찾아가는 세상의 ‘우물’은 무엇입니까? 내 안에서 솟아나는 주님의 기쁨이 오늘 누구에게로 흘러가(Overflow)야 하겠습니까?
기 도: 하나님, 세상의 우물에서 갈증을 채우려던 어리석음을 용서하시고 오직 주님이 주시는 영원한 생수로 우리 영혼을 채워 주옵소서. 내 안에서 솟아나는 은혜가 넘쳐흘러 이웃을 살리는 복된 통로가 되게 하옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
