Whether We Live or Die, We Belong to the Lord

Scripture: Romans 14:8-9
Key Verse: “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord” (Verse 8).
In Canaan, where the people of Israel lived, there were many idols—such as Baal, Asherah, and Molech. The primary concern of those who worshipped these idols was prosperity and happiness. The faith practiced in Canaan was, ultimately, a matter of utilizing idols to secure one’s own abundance and wealth. To them, idols were merely tools necessary to facilitate the process of attaining abundance and prosperity.
However, the Christian faith is distinct from such beliefs. The ultimate destination of the Christian faith is not one’s own prosperity or happiness. Rather, God Himself is the ultimate goal, and His will serves as the guiding compass for one’s life. But is it truly possible to live a life in which God—and God alone—is the ultimate objective?
The Apostle Paul declares: “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord” (Verse 8). Paul asserts that we are the Lord’s possessions and that our very lives belong to God. I believe that if we can make this confession with sincerity, it becomes truly possible to live a life befitting those who belong to the Lord. To live a life solely for oneself is, in essence, to deny the truth that one belongs to the Lord.
Jesus Himself also spoke to His disciples, saying: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34). A life dedicated to the pursuit of one’s own happiness stands in stark contrast to the teachings of Jesus. On the contrary, the true way to follow in the Lord’s footsteps is to choose the path that is painful and arduous—the path of dying to oneself. In a letter sent by Lady Jo Maria—the mother of the patriot Ahn Jung-geun—to her son while he was imprisoned, there appears this passage: “Your death is not merely the death of one individual; it bears the collective indignation of the entire Korean people. … If you were to appeal your sentence, it would be an act of begging the Japanese imperialists for your life. Since this sentence was imposed upon you for having done what is right, do not cowardly plead for your life; rather, to die for the greater cause is the truest act of filial piety toward your mother.” A mother tells her son not to beg for his life. How could a mother not grieve over the death of her son? Yet, Lady Jo Maria regarded Ahn Jung-geun not merely as her own son, but as a son of the nation. Ahn Jung-geun and his mother walked a path that could never be trodden by those who believe that their lives belong solely to themselves.
Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Holding fast to this confession of faith, may we strive to be believers who, even today, live for the sake of the Kingdom of God that the Lord sought to establish.
Devotional Question: What might it look like for us to resolve to live as the Lord’s own?
Prayer: O God, grant us the realization that we belong to You. Enable us, therefore—echoing the confession of the Apostle Paul—to live as Yours, whether in life or in death. Grant that we may deny ourselves and live for the sake of the Kingdom of God You seek to establish—a cause more precious than any sweetness this world has to offer. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

사나 죽으나 주의 것
찬송: 314장 (내 구주 예수를 더욱 사랑)
성경: 로마서 14:8~9
핵심구절: “우리가 살아도 주를 위하여 살고 죽어도 죽를 위하여 죽나니 그러므로 사나 죽으나 우리가 주의 것이로다”(8절)
이스라엘 백성이 사는 가나안에는 바알, 아세라, 몰렉 등 많은 우상이 있었습니다. 우상을 숭배하는 이들의 가장 큰 관심은 번영과 행복이었습니다. 가나안의 신앙은 결국 자신의 풍요와 부요를 위해 우상을 이용하는 것입니다. 우상은 풍요와 번영으로 가는 과정에 필요한 것들일 뿐입니다.
그러나 기독교 신앙은 그것들과 다릅니다. 기독교 신앙의 종착지는 자기 번영과 행복이 아닙니다. 하나님이 목적이며, 그분의 뜻이 삶의 지표로 나타나는 것입니다. 그런데 이렇게 하나님을 목적으로 하여 살아가는 삶이 가능한 것일까요?
사도 바울은 말합니다. “우리가 살아도 주를 위하여 살고 죽어도 주를 위하여 죽나니 그러므로 사나 죽으나 우리가 주의 것이로다(8).” 바울은 우리가 주님의 소유이며, 우리의 생명이 하나님의 것이라고 단언합니다. 이 고백을 진실하게 할 수 있다면 주님의 소유로서 사는 삶이 가능해지리라 믿습니다. 자신을 위한 인생을 사는 것은 내가 주님의 소유임을 부인하는 것입니다.
예수님도 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라(막8:34).” 자기 자신의 행복을 추구하는 삶은 예수님의 가르침과 거리가 멉니다. 오히려 아프고 힘든 길, 내가 죽는 길을 선택하는 것이 주님의 뒤를 따르는 방법입니다.
안중근 의사의 어머니이신 조마리아 여사가 옥에 갇힌 안 의사에게 보낸 편지에 이런 구절이 있습니다. “너의 죽음은 너의 한 사람의 것이 아니라 조선인 전체의 공분을 짊어지고 있는 것이다. … 네가 항소를 한다면 그것은 일제에 목숨을 구걸하는 짓이다. 옳은 일을 하고 받은 형이니 비겁하게 삶을 구하지 말고, 대의에 죽는 것이 어미에 대한 효도이다.” 어머니가 아들에게 목숨을 구걸하지 말라고 합니다. 아들의 죽음이 어찌 슬프지 않겠습니까? 그러나 조마리아 여사는 안중근 의사를 자신의 아들일 뿐 아니라 나라의 아들로 여겼던 것입니다. 내 생명은 나의 것이라고 여기는 사람은 절대 갈 수 없는 길을 안 의사와 그의 어머니는 걸어갔습니다.
사나 죽으나 우리는 주님의 것입니다. 이 신앙 고백을 붙들고, 오늘도 주님이 이루려고 하신 하나님 나라를 위해 살아가는 성도가 되기를 바랍니다.
묵상질문: 우리가 주님의 소유된 백성으로 살아가기로 결단한다는 것은 구체적으로 어떤 모습일까요?
기 도: 하나님, 우리가 주님의 것임을 깨닫게 해 주옵소서. 그래서 바울의 고백처럼 사나 죽으나 주님의 것으로 살아갈 수 있게 하옵소서. 이 세상에서 누리는 모든 달콤함보다 주님이 이루고자 하신 하나님 나라를 위해 나를 버리고 살아가게 하옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
