거목이 자라는 법(Somebody-Nobody-Godbody)
거목이 하루 아침에 자라지 않듯이 빠르게 흐르는 물이 고일 수 없듯이 하나님의 사람은 스피드로 만들어지지 않습니다. 소명을 받은 사람들이 가장 경계해야할 것은 빨리 중심 무대에 서고 싶어하는 성급함입니다.
다윗은 17세에 사무엘로부터 ‘너는 이 땅의 왕이 될 것이다’하는 말과 함께 기름부음을 받은후(Somebody) 사울왕의 미움을 받으며 혹독한 광야의 삶을(Nobody) 통과해야만 했습니다. 아버지 이새의 막내로서 의존적이었을 지도 모르는 다윗은 자기를 사랑하고 돌보아 주어야 하는 장인 사울왕으로부터 집요하게 추적당하며 사람이 사람에게 얼마나 잔인한 존재가 될 수있음을 철저하게 배웠습니다.
사해인근 광야 동굴속으로 피해 다니며 외로움과 고독을 배웠습니다. 그래서 다윗의 수많은 시편에는 고독과 외로움이 묻어있으면서도 함께 하시는 하나님을 향한 간절함이 배어 있습니다. 결국 13년이 지난후 다윗은 30세에 왕위에(Godbody) 오르게 됩니다.
꿈꾸는 사람(Somebody) 요셉은 형제들의 시기와 미움속에서 애굽에 노예로 끌려가 13년동안 잊혀진 존재로(Nobody) 살았습니다. 요셉은 애굽의 관리로 등용될 수 있는 나이 30살이 되기까지 기다려야 했습니다. 형제에게 팔려가기도 하고 모함을 받기도 하고 감옥에 들어가기도 하면서 총리대신이(Godbody)되기까지 기다려야 했습니다.
모세는 이스라엘 백성을 애굽에서(Somebody)구출해야 한다는 꿈을 품고 있으면서도 양치기로 40년동안 아무것도 아닌 존재(Nobody)처럼 기다려야만 했습니다. 결국 모세는 80세에 하나님의 부르심을 받게 됩니다.(Godbody)
하나님께서 하나님의 사람을 부르시고 나서 하나님의 때를 정하십니다. 하나님이 때를 정하실 때는 대체로 2가지 이유가 있습니다.
첫째는 세상에서 의지할 만한 분이 하나님 한분밖에 없음을 깨닫도록 하시기 위함입니다.
둘째는 하나님께서 어떤 특정한 일을 맡기실 때에 감당할 자질과 능력을 갖추도록 하고자 함입니다.
오래 엎드린 새가 높이 날 듯이 오늘 우리에게 가장 절실히 필요한 것은 하나님이 세우실 때까지 ‘외유내강’ 자신을 무르익게 준비하며 카이로스(Kairos, 하나님의 때)를 기다리는 것입니다. 그런 과정을 통해 하나님의 사람(Godbody)은 아름답게 빚어지고 거목으로 자라나고 만들어지게 됩니다.
How a Mighty Tree Grows
(Somebody–Nobody–Godbody)
Just as a great tree does not grow overnight, and just as swiftly flowing water cannot remain still, a person of God is not formed by speed. Those who have received a calling must be especially wary of impatience—the desire to stand at center stage too quickly.
David was anointed by the prophet Samuel at the age of seventeen with the words, “You will be king over this land” (Somebody). Yet, he had to pass through a harsh wilderness season (Nobody), pursued relentlessly by King Saul, who grew jealous and sought his life. David, once the youngest son of Jesse—perhaps still dependent and sheltered—was forced to learn how cruel one human being can be to another, as he was hunted by the very man who should have loved and protected him as a father-in-law.
Fleeing from cave to cave in the wilderness near the Dead Sea, David learned loneliness and isolation. That is why so many of his psalms are marked by deep solitude, yet also filled with a desperate longing for the God who walks with him. After thirteen long years, David finally ascended the throne at the age of thirty (Godbody).
Joseph, a dreamer (Somebody), was sold into slavery in Egypt out of his brothers’ jealousy and hatred. For thirteen years, he lived as a forgotten man (Nobody). He had to wait until the age of thirty before being elevated as a leader in Egypt. Sold by his brothers, falsely accused, and imprisoned, Joseph endured long years of humiliation before becoming the prime minister of Egypt (Godbody).
Moses, too, carried a vision to deliver the Israelites from Egypt (Somebody). Yet he had to wait for forty years in the wilderness, living as a shepherd—seemingly a nobody (Nobody). Only at the age of eighty did Moses finally receive God’s call (Godbody).
After God calls a person, He also appoints His time. There are generally two reasons God sets His timing this way. First, so that we may realize that there is no one in this world we can ultimately rely on except God alone. Second, so that when God entrusts a specific mission, we are fully equipped with the character and capacity to carry it out.
Just as a bird that has crouched low can soar high, what we need most today is the patience to prepare ourselves—strong on the inside while gentle on the outside—until God raises us up. We are called to wait for Kairos, God’s appointed time.
Through such a process, a person of God (Godbody) is beautifully shaped, grows into a mighty tree, and is formed for God’s purposes.
