교회 너머의 예배

목회자는 성도들로부터 직간접적으로 새로운 사역에 대한 기대를 받는다. 그러나 막상 새로운 사역에 대한 아이디어를 제시할 때 가장 많이 듣는 말이 있다. “목사님, 그거 이미 해봤어요. 그런데 결국 여러 가지 이유로 안 되더라고요.” 그 이유가 때로는 관계의 문제 혹은 시기의 문제일 때도 있지만, 결국 이러한 현실적 어려움과 시행착오의 기억은 새로운 사역의 시도를 주저하게 만든다. 그리고 이때가 바로 우리의 시선을 교회 안이 아닌, 바깥으로 돌릴 기회이다.
교회가 세상과 만나는 방식은 다양하지만, 그중에서도 예배는 교회의 정체성을 가장 선명하게 드러내는 자리다. 그렇기에 예배는 교회가 세상과 만날 수 있는 가장 강력한 통로가 된다. 이 글을 통해 교회 울타리 밖에서 예배를 시작하고 확장하기 위한 다섯 가지 실천적 아이디어를 나누고자 한다.
이제 교회가 예배를 통해 세상으로 나아가야 한다.
1. 예배의 기회: 만나는 모든 이들의 음성에 귀 기울여라.
처음 교회 너머의 예배를 기획할 때, 어디에서부터 시작할지 막막한 것이 사실이다. 지역 사회에 관한 통계적 연구도 도움이 될 수도 있지만, 가장 중요한 것은 실제 예배에 참여하게 될 사람들을 만나고 그들의 음성에 귀를 기울이는 것이다. 실제로 내가 지금 섬기고 있는 교회에서 진행하는 지역 공동체 예배(Community Worship)는 2년 전 재의 수요일에 진행했던 ‘Ashes To Go’ 사역에서 만난 한 노년 부부와의 대화에서 비롯되었다.
저소득층을 위한 공공 임대 주택에 거주하는 거동이 불편한 노년 부부는 재를 이마에 바른 채로 성찬은 언제 받을 수 있냐고 질문했다. 교회로 돌아와 성도들을 위한 예배를 준비하면서 그들과의 대화가 계속 마음속에 남았다. 처음 보는 목사에게 다가와 성찬 받기를 원한다고 말하기까지 얼마나 주저했을지가 그들의 표정과 태도에서 나타났고, 짧은 대화를 통해 그들 안에 존재하는 영적 목마름을 발견할 수 있었다. 이후 성찬을 포함한 월 1회 지역 공동체 예배로 이어지게 되었다.
아무리 골방에 틀어박혀 열심히 기도했어도, 이 커플을 만날 가능성도, 그리고 그들을 통해 예배의 기회를 듣게 될 가능성은 없었을 것이다. 우리가 만나는 모든 이들이 이러한 새로운 예배의 기회가 될 수 있음을 기억하고, 그들의 음성을 통해 말씀하시는 성령님을 기대해야 한다.
2. 예배의 시작: 완벽한 준비보다 지금 당장 시작하라.
처음 예배를 시작하기로 마음을 먹었을 때, 가장 큰 고민은 “준비가 충분하지 않다”라는 두려움이다. 그러나 예배는 완성된 프로그램이 아니라 부르심에 대한 즉각적 응답에서 시작된다. 최고의 것을, 최선을 다해 준비한다는 마음가짐은 중요하지만, 예배를 시작하게 만든 이들의 영적 갈증에 응답할 수 있는 가장 좋은 예배는, 바로 지금 시작하는 예배다.
우선, 기존의 익숙한 예배의 틀에서 시작하자. 주어진 공간과 상황 속에서 사용할 수 있는 자원을 살펴보고, 당장 시작할 수 있도록 최대한 간결한 예배로 시작한다. Colony Park에서 드린 첫 예배를 돌아보면, 찬양은 누구나 악보 없이도 부를 수 있는 “It is Well with My Soul”을 선택했고, YouTube에서 찾은 반주에 맞춰 찬양을 불렀다. 짧은 메시지와 더불어 성찬 예식이 중심이 되는 예배였다. 첫 예배를 돌이켜보면 부족한 점이 많았지만, 첫 대화로부터 2주 만에 시작된 예배는 지난 2년간 이어지고 있다. “지금 여기서 시작하자”라는 결단이 교회 밖의 예배를 현실로 만든다.
3. 예배의 참여: 교회 전체가 참여하게 하라.
교회 너머의 예배를 준비하고 실행하는 데 있어서 목회자의 역할은 클 수밖에 없다. 이 경우 목회자 한 사람의 프로젝트로 인식된다면 이는 오래 유지될 수 없기 때문에 교회 전체가 참여해야 한다. 예배는 그때 비로소 공동체의 힘을 갖기 때문이다.
2년 전 재의수요일 이후 첫 주일 예배에서 노년 커플과 나눈 대화를 인용하며, 교회 너머의 예배에 대한 비전을 나누고 성도들의 참여를 요청했다. 평일 오후 시간에 이루어지는 예배에 많은 성도들이 직접적으로 참여하기에 어려움이 많았지만, 어떤 성도는 기도와 간식으로, 음악에 재능이 있는 이들은 초청 음악가로, 또한 평신도 지도자들은 설교자로 섬기기를 자원했다. 이미 다양한 사역을 교회 안에서 해오던 이들에게 교회 너머의 예배는 단순히 이웃을 돕는 자비의 사역을 넘어서는 교회의 선교적 정체성을 다시금 확인하는 계기가 되었다. 낯선 이들과 함께하는 예배는 교회 공동체에서도 사역의 관심과 동력이 밖으로 향하는 새로운 선교의 동기가 되어줄 것이다.
4. 예배의 확장: 교회와 지역 공동체의 다리가 되게 하라.
교회 너머의 예배의 목적은 단지 ‘장소 이동’이 아니다. 진짜 목적은 교회와 지역 공동체 사이에 새로운 다리를 놓는 것이다. 예배를 준비하는 단계에서 다양한 이해 당사자와 의사소통하게 되는데, 이 과정을 통해 개인을 넘어서 지역 사회가 경험하고 있는 다양한 도전과 문제들을 마주하게 된다. 이를 통해 교회가 지역 공동체를 섬길 수 있는 여러 사역이 시작될 수 있고, 이를 통해 교회는 자연스럽게 지역 속으로 확장된다.
예배에 참여하는 이들, 그리고 지역 사회의 리더들과 이야기를 나누던 중, 많은 주민이 영어를 배울 기회가 없었음을 알게 되었다. 교회에서 매주 토요일마다 진행해 오던 ESL (English as Second Language) 클래스를 격주로 인근 커뮤니티 센터에서 진행하게 되었다. 예배를 통해 우리 교회에 대해 알고 신뢰를 쌓은 많은 주민이, 예배에서 만난 이들이 진행하는 ESL 클래스에 부담 없이 참여하게 되었고, 나아가 교회에서 이뤄지는 다양한 사역과 이벤트에 참여하고 있다. 예배가 단지 교회 “밖에서 드린 예배”가 아니라 “지역과 연결하는 예배”가 될 때, 새로운 사역의 기회가 열린다.
5. 예배 너머의 교회: 지역 공동체를 교회로 인식하고 섬기라.
교회 너머의 예배를 기획하고 진행할 때 교회 전체가 공유해야 할 중요한 인식이 있다. 바로 지역 공동체를 교회로 인식하고 섬기는 것이다. 만약 교회 너머의 예배가 예배에 참여하는 이들을 다시 개별 교회로 초대하기 위함이라면, 확장되었던 사역의 범위는 다시금 교회 안으로 줄어들고 그 영향력은 교회 건물 안에 머물 수밖에 없다.
예배가 일어나는 공간과 그 자리에 참여하는 이들을 교회로 인식하고 섬기기 시작할 때, 존 웨슬리의 “세계는 나의 교구”(The world is my parish)라는 교회의 선교적 정체성과 방향성이 더욱 분명해진다. 한 달에 한 번 혹은 그 횟수와 관계없이 예배를 통해 시작되는 공동체 자체가 교회가 되고, 예배는 시간과 공간을 넘어서, 하나님이 이미 일하고 계시는 현장에서 하나님께 응답하는 삶 전체가 된다.
교회의 정체성은 예배다. 그러나 예배를 교회 울타리 안에 가두는 순간 교회의 정체성도 갇히게 된다. 예수님의 발자취를 따라가다 보면 회당보다 길거리, 광장, 식탁과 같은 예수님을 필요로 하는 이들이 있는 곳에서 더 많은 시간을 보내셨음을 발견하게 된다. 웨슬리 또한 들판과 광장에서 말씀을 전함으로 수많은 영혼을 만나고 교회가 다시 살아나는 경험을 했다. 사람들은 더 이상 쉽게 교회에 오지 않는다. 이제 교회가 예배를 통해 세상으로 나아가야 한다. 그리고 그곳에서 이미 일하고 계시는 하나님을 발견하고 동참해야 한다.
Worship Beyond the Church Walls
Pastors often face direct or indirect expectations from their congregations to initiate new ministries. Yet when a new idea is proposed, one response is heard more frequently than any other:
“Pastor, we’ve already tried that. It didn’t work out for various reasons.”
Sometimes those reasons involve relational challenges or poor timing. More often, however, the accumulated memories of failure and trial-and-error make congregations hesitant to attempt anything new. Paradoxically, this moment of hesitation may be precisely the moment to shift our gaze—from inside the church to beyond its walls.
There are many ways the church encounters the world, but worship is where the church’s identity is revealed most clearly. For that reason, worship can become one of the most powerful channels through which the church meets the world. In this article, I would like to share five practical ideas for initiating and expanding worship beyond the church walls.
It is time for the church to move into the world through worship.
1. The Opportunity for Worship: Listen to the Voices of Those You Meet
When first envisioning worship beyond the church, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin. Statistical studies of the local community may be helpful, but the most important step is meeting the people who will actually participate in worship and listening carefully to their voices.
The Community Worship we currently offer in our congregation began two years ago from a conversation with an elderly couple I met during an Ashes to Go ministry on Ash Wednesday. The couple lived in a public housing complex for low-income residents and had limited mobility. With ashes still on their foreheads, they asked a simple question: When can we receive Communion?
As I returned to church to prepare worship for our congregation, that conversation stayed with me. I could sense from their expressions how much courage it must have taken to approach a pastor they had never met and ask for Communion. In that brief encounter, I recognized a deep spiritual hunger within them. That moment eventually led to a monthly community worship service that includes Holy Communion.
No matter how fervently I might have prayed in solitude, I would never have encountered this couple—or heard the call to worship that came through them—without meeting them face to face. We must remember that everyone we meet can become an opportunity for new worship, and we must learn to expect the Holy Spirit to speak through their voices.
2. The Beginning of Worship: Start Now Rather Than Waiting for Perfect Preparation
The greatest fear when starting a new worship service is often the feeling of being “unprepared.” Yet worship does not begin with a perfected program; it begins with an immediate response to God’s calling. While striving to offer our best is important, the most faithful worship is the one that responds to the present spiritual hunger of those who are calling for it.
Start with what is familiar. Assess the resources available within the given space and context, and begin with the simplest form of worship possible. Looking back at our first worship service at Colony Park, we chose a hymn that anyone could sing without sheet music—“It Is Well with My Soul.” We used a YouTube accompaniment, shared a brief message, and centered the service around Holy Communion.
That first service was far from perfect. Yet worship began just two weeks after the initial conversation, and it has now continued for over two years. The decision to say, “Let’s begin here and now,” is what transforms worship beyond the church walls from an idea into reality.
3. Participation in Worship: Engage the Whole Church
In preparing and carrying out worship beyond the church, the pastor’s role is inevitably significant. However, if such worship becomes the pastor’s personal project, it cannot be sustained. Worship gains its true strength only when the whole church participates.
On the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday, I shared the story of the elderly couple with our congregation and invited them to participate in this vision of worship beyond the church. Because the service took place on weekday afternoons, many could not attend in person. Still, some offered prayers and snacks; musicians volunteered as guest performers; and lay leaders stepped forward to preach.
For members already deeply involved in church ministries, worship beyond the church walls became more than an act of charity—it was a reaffirmation of the church’s missional identity. Worship with unfamiliar neighbors redirected the congregation’s energy outward and provided fresh momentum for mission.
4. The Expansion of Worship: Become a Bridge Between Church and Community
The purpose of worship beyond the church is not merely a change of location. Its true purpose is to build a bridge between the church and the local community.
During the planning process, conversations with various stakeholders often reveal broader challenges facing the community. These encounters can spark new ministries through which the church naturally extends into the neighborhood.
Through conversations with worship participants and community leaders, we learned that many residents lacked opportunities to learn English. In response, we began offering our ESL (English as a Second Language) classes—previously held only at church—biweekly at a nearby community center.
Because trust had already been built through worship, many residents felt comfortable joining the ESL classes led by people they had met in worship. This participation eventually led them to engage with other church ministries and events. When worship becomes a connector to the community rather than simply an offsite service, new doors for ministry open.
5. The Church Beyond Worship: Recognize and Serve the Community as the Church
One essential mindset must be shared by the entire congregation: recognizing the local community itself as the church. If worship beyond the church exists merely to invite people back into a particular congregation, the scope of ministry inevitably shrinks again to the church building.
When we begin to see the worshiping community and the space where worship takes place as the church itself, John Wesley’s declaration—“The world is my parish”—takes on renewed clarity. Whether worship occurs monthly or at any other interval, the community formed through worship becomes the church. Worship transcends time and space, becoming a whole-life response to God’s ongoing work in the world.
The identity of the church is worship. But when worship is confined within church walls, the church’s identity is confined as well. Following the footsteps of Jesus, we discover that He spent more time in streets, marketplaces, and around tables than in synagogues. Wesley, too, proclaimed the gospel in fields and public squares, witnessing the renewal of the church.
People no longer come easily to church. Now the church must go into the world through worship—discovering where God is already at work and joining in that work.
