“The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” (2 Kings 4:1)
Upon hearing the woman’s sad circumstances, Elisha wanted to help the woman with God’s compassion. So he asked her to tell him first what was in that house. Jesus told the disci- ples to find out what was available even when performing the miracle of five loaves and two fish. The widow at Zarephath also brought flour and oil to Elijah, which she had wanted to eat for her last meal and experienced a miracle with it. God works using what we have.
Knowing that the house had only a small jar of olive oil, Elisha told her to borrow as many empty jars as possible from all her neighbors. The reason why she needed to borrow a lot of empty jars was to believe in God and prepare a jar of blessing. He meant to prepare a lot of jars of faith. It also meant to pre- pare a lot of jars of obedience. The woman, who was the wife of a dead prophet, might not have simply paid off her debts and earned her living expenses through this experience, but she must have learned how to believe in God and live obedi- ently. She came to thrive by preparing the greatest jar of grace
