[Jeremiah 32:36 – 32:44]
🔖Summary
God would once again raise up destroyed Judah and restore them to their former glory. Judah’s restoration would form the foundation of God’s eternal, unbreakable covenant.
📜Bible Reading
36 “Now therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city of which you say, ‘It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, by famine, and by pestilence’:
37 Behold, I will gather them from all the countries to which I drove them in my anger and my wrath and in great indignation. I will bring them back to this place, and I will make them dwell in safety.
38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
39 I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them.
40 I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.
41 I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul.
42 “For thus says the LORD: Just as I have brought all this great disaster upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I promise them.
43 Fields shall be bought in this land of which you are saying, ‘It is a desolation, without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’
44 Fields shall be bought for money, and deeds shall be signed and sealed and witnessed, in the land of Benjamin, in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities
🔖Thinking & Understanding
God severely punished the people of Judah because of the seriousness of their sins (vv. 36-37a). However, God also declared that he would restore Judah. God would call and gather the scattered people of Judah and make them his people once again (vv. 38-39). When that time came, God would establish an eternal covenant with all Israel and rebuild them as the blessed people of God (vv. 40-41). And although everything in Jerusalem had been ruined or destroyed by the Babylonian army, God would ensure that all would be fully restored (vv. 37b-44).
🔖Who is God?
Vv. 39-41 God makes a new covenant with all people who return to him. He gives them a new heart and changes them into people who fear him. God fulfils this new covenant through Jesus, and he gives eternal life to those who believe Jesus is their saviour. As people of the new covenant who believe that Jesus is our saviour, are we living as people who fear God?
🔖What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 42-44 None of God’s commands are meaningless. When he instructed Jeremiah to purchase land in Judah, a place destined for destruction, he did this in order to fulfil God’s promise of restoration. As God promised, the Israelites would live freely, buying and selling land in every part of Jerusalem. If we trust that everything is in God’s hands, judgement nor hardship will prevail.
🙏Prayer
Lord, help us to be bold and trust that you are the living God whose power transcends today’s hardships.
In Jesus Name. Amen 😇
