“Not a Shining Person, but a Person Standing Before the Light”
Numbers 8:2
Everyone longs to shine. In today’s world, people often measure their worth through visibility—achievement, recognition, image, and approval. We are constantly tempted to ask, “How brightly am I shining?”
But Numbers 8 asks a different question. Not, “Are you shining?” but, “Are you standing before the Light?”
The lamps in the Tabernacle were never lit to display themselves.
“Speak to Aaron and say to him: ‘When you set up the lamps, see that all seven light up the area in front of the lampstand.’” (Numbers 8:2)
1. The Lamp Does Not Burn for Its Own Glory
The lamp in the Tabernacle was more than illumination. It symbolized the presence of God. God commanded that the lamps shine “toward the front of the lampstand.” Light has direction. It not only drives out darkness but also establishes orientation and purpose.
Faith is not about how much I shine, but where my light is directed.
When light points toward oneself, it becomes self-glorification.
When it points toward God, it becomes worship.
When it seeks human applause, it becomes performance.
When it reflects God’s presence, it becomes offering.
2. A Person Standing Before the Light Knows Their Place
After the instructions about the lamps, Numbers 8 immediately speaks about the purification and dedication of the Levites. The order matters. First comes the light, then the service.
Before serving, one must first stand before the light of God.
The Levites were sprinkled with the water of cleansing, shaved, and washed their garments (Num. 8:7). This was not merely about hygiene; it symbolized passing through death and renewal. What mattered was not ability, but purity.
God seeks not merely “capable people,” but people who are consecrated to Him.
A person standing before the light is humble, because they know they are not the source of the light. Humility is not thinking less of oneself; it is seeing oneself rightly before God.
3. The Light Becomes Service That Sustains the Community
The lamps of the Tabernacle were not private candles hidden away in a room. They illuminated the gathering place of God’s people and guided them through the wilderness night.
The Book of Numbers is, after all, a wilderness journey.
One person’s spirituality can brighten the darkness of a community. One person’s obedience can help establish direction for many.
We often confuse “a shining person” with “a person standing before the light.”
A shining person attracts attention to themselves.
But a person standing before the light directs people’s attention toward God.
A shining person seeks to leave behind their own name.
But a person standing before the light leaves behind traces of God’s grace.
A shining person needs a stage.
A person standing before the light needs the sanctuary.
Jesus did not merely speak about light—He became the Light.
“I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12)
Though He was the true Light, He never sought to glorify Himself. He stood before the will of the Father and reflected the Father’s glory.
The Incarnation is the humility of light.
The Cross is the self-emptying of light (kenosis; Phil. 2:7).
The Resurrection is the dawn of unquenchable life.
Jesus did not gather people who appeared impressive and shining. He restored those whose light was fading and brought them again before the Light (Isaiah 42:3).
Conclusion
Perhaps the prayer we need today is not:
“Lord, make me shine.”
But rather:
“Lord, place me before Your light.”
A person standing before the light does not fear darkness, because they know the source of the light is not within themselves.
Shining people may capture attention for a moment, but people who stand before the Light bring joy to the heart of God.
Prayer
Loving God,
we lay down before You our desire to shine before others.
In the light of Your Word, reveal our darkness,
and cleanse us again through Your grace.
Help us walk humbly in the light of Jesus Christ.
Make us small lamps that brighten the lives of others and strengthen the community around us.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
