‘Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.’ [1 PETER 5:8]
The Apostle Peter issues a most urgent and solemn warning to believers who are enduring suffering. The reality is that our spiritual battle is tangible, and our adversary prowls around us like a hungry, growling lion. Who are the ones the Devil seeks to “devour”? They are likely those whose spiritual defenses have been weakened—those weighed down by anxiety (v. 7), those too proud to accept God’s help (v. 5), or those whose spirits have crumbled in the face of adversity.
The exhortation to “be sober-minded and watchful” does not simply mean living in a constant state of tension. Rather, it calls for spiritual alertness. When we are swept away by the busyness of daily life or the tides of our emotions—forgetting who the true Master of our souls is—the enemy seizes that opportunity to sow seeds of doubt and fear. Just as true self-care begins with closely examining the condition of our body and mind, spiritual self-care begins with remaining vigilant and attentive to where our soul’s gaze is currently fixed.
Thankfully, this grave warning is followed by a steadfast promise. When we stand firm in our faith to resist the enemy—and when we endure in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are undergoing the same trials—the “God of all grace” will personally restore us and make us strong (v. 10). No matter how menacing the roaring lion may seem, we have the Victor, Jesus Christ—the “Lion of Judah”—standing right behind us. Today, rather than allowing ourselves to be held captive by vague anxieties, let us fortify the boundaries of our souls through the Word and prayer. The enemy can never prevail against a vigilant soul.
‘근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니’ [베드로전서 5:8]
사도 베드로는 고난받는 성도들을 향해 매우 긴급하고 엄중한 경고를 던집니다. 우리의 영적 싸움은 실체가 있으며, 그 적은 굶주려 으르렁거리는 사자처럼 우리 주변을 맴돌고 있다는 사실입니다. 마귀가 노리는 ‘삼킬 자’는 누구일까요? 아마도 영적으로 방어력이 약해진 사람, 즉 근심에 눌려 있거나(7절), 교만하여 하나님의 도우심을 거부하거나(5절), 고난 앞에서 마음이 무너진 사람일 것입니다.
‘근신하라 깨어라’는 권면은 단순히 긴장 속에 살라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 이것은 영적인 정신 차림입니다. 우리가 일상의 분주함이나 감정의 파도에 휩쓸려 내 영혼의 주인이 누구인지를 잊어버릴 때, 원수는 그 틈을 타서 의심과 두려움을 심어놓습니다. 진정한 자기 돌봄은 내 몸과 마음의 상태를 세밀하게 살피는 것에서 시작되듯, 영적 자기 돌봄은 내 영혼이 지금 어디에 시선을 두고 있는지 깨어 살피는 것입니다.
감사하게도 이 무서운 경고 뒤에는 든든한 약속이 따릅니다. 우리가 믿음에 굳게 서서 대적할 때, 동일한 고난을 겪는 형제들과 연대하며 견딜 때, ‘모든 은혜의 하나님’이 우리를 친히 온전하게 하시고 굳건하게 하실 것입니다(10절). 우는 사자가 아무리 위협해도, 우리 뒤에는 ‘유다의 사자’이신 승리자 예수 그리스도가 계십니다. 오늘 하루, 막연한 불안에 사로잡히기보다 말씀과 기도로 내 영혼의 경계선을 튼튼히 합시다. 깨어 있는 영혼에게 원수는 결코 승리할 수 없습니다.
