“They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?'” [LUKE 24:32]
A burning heart is the surest sign of the presence of the Living Word. Notice that the disciples did not say, “Were not our brains filled with new information?” but “Were not our hearts burning?” The ultimate purpose of the Scriptures is not to make us experts in theology, but to set our spirits ablaze with the person of Jesus Christ.
Have you ever wondered why your heart glows during a quiet moment of prayer or while reading a familiar verse? It is because Jesus Himself is “opening the Scriptures” to you. This spiritual heat is not something you can manufacture by your own willpower or emotional effort; it is the byproduct of His company. We often focus so much on the “road”—the difficulties and the journey—that we ignore the inward fire. A disciple must learn to pay attention to these divine flickers. If your heart has grown cold and mechanical, it is likely because you have been reading the Book without the Author.
