2026 Lenten Devotional: Day 39 (April 3) — Holy Week: Good Friday
Father, forgive them.

Scripture: Luke 23:33–38
Key Verse: “Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing’” (v. 34).
A young girl who truly trusted in Jesus lost her parents in a tragic accident. Seeking employment to support her younger siblings, she fell victim to a wicked scheme and ended up working in the nightlife industry. One day, a spiritual teacher moved in next door to the woman.
Upon accidentally discovering the nature of her neighbor’s work, the spiritual teacher rebuked her: “How can you use the precious body God gave you as a mere instrument of pleasure to earn money?
God is furious with you.” Recalling the love of Jesus—which she had long forgotten—the woman repented every night. She prayed earnestly to be delivered from her situation, yet she found herself unable to escape it. Observing that the woman’s life remained unchanged, the spiritual teacher began counting her workdays by stacking a small stone for each day she left for work. As the pile of stones grew into a mound, he unleashed a torrent of venomous words: “You lewd and filthy woman! God will never forgive you!” That night, weeping bitterly, the woman prayed fervently to God, begging Him to take her life. Eventually, God took the woman’s life—and, at the same time, He took the spiritual teacher’s life as well. Yet, astonishingly, the woman went to Heaven, while the spiritual teacher went to Hell. The spiritual teacher protested to God. Then God spoke. “My child, have you not focused your heart solely on the accusations regarding this woman’s sins day after day? Yet, this woman—without missing a single day—confessed her own sins while centering her prayers on the grace and mercy of the precious blood of My Son, Jesus.”
In today’s passage, Jesus intercedes with God the Father, pleading for the forgiveness of the sins of the crowd who were crucifying Him (v. 34). He forgave the sins of human beings who—rather than welcoming Jesus, who had come to save them—instead scourged Him, mocked Him, and nailed Him to the cross. Furthermore, through the cross, He fulfilled His promise that even such people—if they receive Jesus—would be granted the right to become children of God (John 1:12).
God, in His mercy, looked upon us—who were already dead in our sins and trespasses, with nothing left but to face judgment before His divine justice—and sent Jesus to this earth to give us life through the grace of the cross (Eph. 2:4–5). Therefore, all of us who have been transferred from the judgment of death into life must—in the spirit of the Lord’s Prayer—live lives of service, forgiving, loving, and ministering to those who have sinned against us, empowered by the mercy of the cross.
Devotional Question: Are you forgiving, serving, and loving those who have sinned against you?
Prayer: O God, we give You profound thanks; in Your abundant mercy, You have made us—who were responsible for the death of Your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ—Your very own children. Since You have given life to us sinners through the precious blood of the cross, grant that we may now cease our ways of condemning and hating others, and instead live our lives in the love of Jesus. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

아버지, 저들을 용서하옵소서.

핵심구절: “이에 예수께서 이르시되 아버지 저들을 사하여 주옵소서 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못하니이다 하시더라”(34절)
예수님을 참으로 신뢰하던 한 소녀가 불의의 사고로 부모님을 잃었습니다. 소녀는 동생들의 생계를 위해 취직하려다가 나쁜 사람의 꼼에 넘어가 유흥업소에서 일하게 되었습니다. 어느 날, 이 여인의 집 옆에 한 영성가가 이사를 왔습니다. 영성가는 옆집 여인이 어떤 일을 하는지 우연히 알게 된 후 그녀를 책망했습니다. “하나님께서 주신 귀한 몸을 어떻게 돈을 벌기 위한 쾌락의 도구로 사용합니까? 하나님이 진노하십니다.” 여인은 오랫동안 잊고 있었던 예수님의 사랑을 떠올리며 밤마다 회개했습니다.
그리고 이 상황에서 건져 주시길 기도했지만, 좀처럼 벗어날 수가 없었습니다. 달라지지 않는 여인을 보며 영성가는 여인이 출근하는 날수만큼 돌맹이를 쌓으며 셈했습니다. 돌이 무더기가 되자 “음란하고 더러운 여인이여! 하나님께서 당신을 용서하지 않으실 것입니다.”라며 독설을 퍼부었습니다. 그날 밤, 여인은 눈물 흘리며 하나님께 자신의 생명을 거둬가 주십사 하며 간절히 기도했습니다. 결국 하나님께서 여인의 생명을 취하셨고 함께 영성가의 생명도 취하셨습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 여인은 천국으로, 영성가는 지옥으로 갔습니다. 영성가는 하나님께 항의했습니다. 그러자 하나님이 말씀하셨습니다. “얘야, 너는 날마다 이 여인의 죄에 대한 송사만을 마음에 두지 않았느냐. 하지만 이 여인은 하루도 빠짐없이 자신의 죄를 고백하면서 내 아들 예수의 보혈의 은혜와 긍휼을 중심에 두고 기도 했단다.”
오늘 본문에서 예수님은 자신을 못 박는 무리의 죄를 용서해 주실 것을 아버지 하나님께 간구하고 계십니다(34). 우리를 구원해 주러 오신 예수님을 오히려 채찍질하며 비웃고 못 박은 인간들의 죄를 용서하신 것입니다. 그리고 그러한 인간일지라도 예수님을 영접하면 하나님의 자녀가 되게 하신다는(요 1:12) 약속의 말씀을 십자가 안에서 이루셨습니다.
죄와 허물로 이미 죽었고 하나님의 공의 앞에서 심판받을 일만 남았던 우리를 하나님은 긍휼히 여기사 예수님을 이 땅에 보내셔서 십자가의 은혜로 살리셨습니다(엡 2:4~5). 그러므로 죽음의 심판에서 생명으로, 옮겨진 우리 모두는 주기도문처럼, 우리에게 죄 지은 자를 십자가의 긍휼(矜恤)로 용서하고 사랑하면서 섬기는 삶을 살아야 합니다.
묵상질문: 내게 죄 지은 자를 용서하며 섬기며 사랑하고 있습니까?
기 도: 하나님의 독생자 예수 그리스도를 죽인 우리를 풍성하신 긍휼로 자녀 되게 하신 하나님, 참 고맙습니다. 죄인이었던 우리를 십자가의 보혈로 살게 하셨으니 이제는 타인을 정죄하고 미워하던 모습을 멈추고 예수님의 사랑으로 살게 하옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
