Day 28 in LENT: Like Nicodemus
Some of the crowd who had been listening said, “He is indeed the prophet,” and some said, “He is the Christ,” but others said, “Would the Christ come from Galilee?” – John 7:40-41
The Gospel shows that Jesus had loyal friends, hostile enemies, and many sympathetic but fearful followers. People like the rich young man and Nicodemus admired Jesus but were held back by fear of losing status or possessions.
Henri Nouwen relates to these hesitant sympathizers. Like Nicodemus, who cautiously defended Jesus without risking his own standing, I often speak indirectly in committees or meetings—hinting rather than openly expressing my love for Christ. When others challenge my comments as unprofessional or sentimental, I retreat into silence.
Nicodemus reveals how fear of rejection can keep us from speaking honestly and courageously about our faith.
Our Prayer:
Dear Lord, show me your kindness and your gentleness, you who are meek and humble of heart. So often I say to myself, “The Lord loves me.” Yet time and again I have to confess that I have not let your love descend fully from my mind into my heart.
In the coming weeks, O Lord, I will be able to see again how much you indeed love me. Let these weeks become an opportunity for me to let go of all my resistances to your love and an occasion for you to call me closer to you. Amen.
