2026 Lenten Devotional, Day 17 (March 9)
Are You Ready?
Hymn: 176 (When Will the Lord Return?)
Scripture: Luke 12:35-40
Key Verse: “Stand there, with your loins girded and your lamps burning” (35)
In today’s passage, Jesus speaks to his disciples about a “life of preparation” through the parable of the servant who stays awake and waits. The question, “Are you ready?” isn’t simply about preparing for some future moment; it’s a challenge to “how you use your time” in the present moment. The Lord commands them to be girded and keep their lamps burning. In Jewish society at the time, girding one’s loins signified being ready for immediate action, and lighting a lamp signified remaining alert and resolute in the darkness, never forgetting one’s mission. In other words, a Christian’s time should not pass indefinitely, but should be used with a sense of urgency, toward the Lord’s return.
We often live under the illusion that time is ours. So, we waste it on our own pleasures and comforts, and we put off doing things for the Lord, saying, “I’ll do them later when I have more time.” However, the Lord warned us that just as a thief never knows when he will come, so the Son of Man will come at an unexpected hour. Those who are prepared use their time differently. They love each day as if it were the last opportunity the Lord has given them, and they live faithfully as if today were the day they would meet Him face to face. This is the attitude we must recover during Lent: to gather up meaningless wasted time, refill our lamps with oil, and prepare our lives so that we can respond immediately to the Lord’s call.
Let us reflect on our daily lives. Are we perhaps falling into a spiritual slumber, our lamps fading out? Are our hearts alert enough to open the door when the Lord knocks? A wise servant is ready to welcome the Master, whether he comes in the middle of the night or at dawn. When we view the time given to us through the lens of the Lord’s return, our priorities completely shift. When we let go of our self-centered pursuits and devote time to seeking the Lord’s will, we will live the lives of true disciples whom the Lord praises with His “blessed” words when He returns.
Meditation Question: When in my day today do I “keep my lamp burning” (stay spiritually awake) in anticipation of the Lord’s return?
Prayer: God, help me not to be consumed by the passing of time, but to stay awake, awaiting the Lord’s return. Just as I gird my loins and keep my lamps burning, help me to use the time given to me today preciously to fulfill Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

오늘 본문에서 예수님은 제자들에게 깨어 기다리는 종의 비유를 통해 ‘준비된 삶’에 대해 말씀하십니다. “준비됐나요?”라는 물음은 단순히 미래의 어느 시점을 대비하라는 뜻이 아니라, 지금 이 순간 ‘시간을 사용하는 방식’에 대한 도전입니다. 주님은 허리에 띠를 띠고 등불을 켜고 있으라고 명령하십니다. 당시 유대 사회에서 허리띠를 띠는 것은 즉시 행동할 준비가 되었음을, 등불을 켜는 것은 어둠 속에서도 사명을 잊지 않고 깨어 있음을 의미합니다. 즉, 그리스도인의 시간은 막연히 흘러가는 것이 아니라, 주님의 다시 오심이라는 목적지를 향해 긴장감 있게 사용되어야 합니다.
우리는 종종 시간을 ‘나의 소유’라고 착각하며 살아갑니다. 그래서 내 즐거움과 안락함을 위해 시간을 소진하고, 주님을 위한 일은 ‘나중에 여유가 생기면’ 하겠다며 미루곤 합니다. 그러나 주님은 도둑이 어느 때에 올지 모르는 것처럼, 인자도 생각하지 않은 때에 오리라고 경고하셨습니다. 준비된 자의 시간 사용 방식은 다릅니다. 그들은 오늘이 주님이 주신 마지막 기회인 것처럼 사랑하고, 오늘이 주님을 대면하는 날인 것처럼 성실하게 살아갑니다. 무의미하게 낭비되는 시간들을 모아 등불의 기름을 채우고, 주님의 부르심에 즉각 응답할 수 있도록 삶의 옷매무새를 가다듬는 것이 바로 사순절 우리가 회복해야 할 태도입니다.
우리의 일과를 돌아봅시다. 혹시 우리는 영적인 잠에 빠져 등불이 꺼져가고 있지는 않습니까? 주님이 문을 두드리실 때 즉시 열어드릴 수 있을 만큼 우리의 마음은 깨어 있습니까? 지혜로운 종은 주인이 밤중에 오든 새벽에 오든 상관없이 주인을 맞이할 준비가 되어 있습니다. 이처럼 우리에게 주어진 시간을 ‘주님의 재림’이라는 렌즈를 통해 바라볼 때, 우리의 우선순위는 완전히 바뀝니다. 나를 위한 분주함을 내려놓고 주님의 뜻을 구하는 데 시간을 드릴 때, 우리는 주님이 오셔서 “복이 있도다”라고 칭찬하시는 참된 제자의 삶을 살게 될 것입니다.
묵상질문: 오늘 나의 하루 중 주님의 다시 오심을 기다리며 ‘등불을 켜두는(영적으로 깨어 있는) 시간‘은 언제입니까?
기 도: 하나님, 흘러가는 시간 속에 매몰되지 않고 주님의 다시 오심을 기다리며 깨어 있게 하옵소서. 허리에 띠를 띠고 등불을 밝히듯, 오늘 내게 주어진 시간을 주님의 뜻을 이루는 일에 귀하게 사용하게 하옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
