This is the age when education is placed on the very highest pinnacle. In every civilized country we are told that if we will educate the people and give them better surroundings, we shall produce better characters. Such talk and such theories stir aspirations, but they do not work out well in reality. The kingdom within must be adjusted first before education can have its true use. To educate an unregenerate man is but to increase the possibility of cultured degradation. In the 15th chapter of St. John’s Gospel where our Lord instructs His disciples about the new dispensation “I am.” “I am the Vine. . . .” If the dominant identity of the disciple is not built up by God Himself, in vain are the mountains looked to for help. 이 시대는 가장 최고의 정상에 “교육”을 두고 강조하고 있습니다. 모든 문명국마다 사람을 잘 교육하고 환경을 더 좋게 만들면 더 선하고 훌륭한 품성의 사람들이 나오게 될 것이라고 주장하고 있습니다. 그런 주장과 이론은 사람들의 마음을 흥분시킵니다. 그러나 실제로는 그렇게 되지 않습니다. 그 이유는 먼저 내면의 세계가 제대로 되어야 교육이라는 것이 의미가 있기 때문입니다. 거듭나지 않은 사람을 교육하는 것은 오히려 ‘교양있는 타락’의 가능성을 증가시킵니다. 요한복음 15장에서 우리 주님께서 제자들이 가질 새로운 성향에 대하여 말씀해 주셨습니다. “나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지니.” (요한복음 15:5). 위대한 성도의 품성은 좋은 가문이나 문화나 교육의 산물이 아니라 하나님의 작품인 것입니다. 챔버스 묵상 중에서.
