Many Christian workers have left Jesus Christ alone and yet tried to serve Him out of a sense of duty, or because they sense a need as a result of their own discernment. They’re motivated by their conscience or a sense of duty, but their souls aren’t in intimate contact with their Lord; they’re leaning on their own understanding. It isn’t a sin to work for God in this way, and there’s no punishment attached to it. We need to rely on the resurrection life of Jesus on a much deeper level than we do now. We should get in the habit of continually seeking His counsel on everything, instead of making our own common sense decisions and then asking Him to bless them. We are not told to “walk in the light” of our conscience or in the light of a sense of duty, but to “walk in the light as He is in the light. . .” (1 John 1:7). When we do something out of a sense of duty, it is easy to explain the reasons for our actions to others.
But when we do something out of obedience to the Lord, there can be no other explanation— just obedience. By Oswald Chambers.

많은 그리스도인들은 주님의 일을 하면서 예수 없이 일 합니다. 그들은 양심이나 의무감에 의한 동기를 가지고 주님의 일을 하지만 영혼은 주님과의 친밀한 접촉은 없습니다. 이런 식으로 하나님을 위해 일하는 것은 죄가 아니며, 또 처벌도 없습니다. 그러나 예수 그리스도를 바르게 깨닫지 못함으로 인하여 혼돈과 슬픔과 어려움이 발생합니다. 우리는 지금 우리가 의지하는 것보다도 훨씬 더 깊게 예수님의 부활 생명을 의지해야 할 필요가 있습니다.만사를 주님과 의논하는 좋은 습관을 길러야 합니다. 그러나 우리는 이렇게 하는 대신에 상식적인 결정을 내리고 하나님께서 그 결정들을 축복하실 것을 부탁합니다. 그러나 우리는 양심의 빛 안에서 걷기 위해, 또는 의무감으로 살라고 부름을 받은 것이 아닙니다.
주께서 빛 가운데 계심같이 우리도 빛 가운데서 걸으라고 부름을 받은 것입니다(요1서 1:7). 우리가 의무감으로 뭔가를 할 때는 그 일을 왜 하여야 하는지 다른 사람들에게 설명할 수 있습니다. 그러나 주께 순종하기 위하여 무엇을 할 때는 순종 외에는 따지는 것이 불가능합니다. 챔버스 묵상 중에서.
