📖English QT(2 kings 18)
It is never easy to just listen to someone insults us. But king Hezekiah ordered his men to be silent when their enemy speaks to them. King Sennacherib of Assyria sent Rabshakeh and other commanders to Jerusalem.
When they came, they told the people of Judah to surrender to Assyria. Furthermore, they told the people of Judah not to listen to king Hezekiah’s plea to depend on the Lord. They said that no other gods have saved their people from the power of Assyria. When king Hezekiah’s men heard this, they remained silent. It wasn’t because Sennacherib’s men were right or because they had nothing to say.
They were silent because king Hezekiah told them to be silent.
King Hezekiah did not respond to the criticisms or attack from other people but brought them to the Lord. He did this because he believed that the Lord, though He may seem silent at times, listens to every word that people say and pays back people accordingly.
The words that fuel quarrels are not beneficial. While Satan tells us to be enraged and seek conflict, wisdom teaches us that calming the quarrel is the way of wisdom. (Proverbs 15:18) Much of the world around is very much immersed in controversies and quarreling, always eager to make one’s argument, but not as much in seeking calm. In times like this, we need to learn to be still and give God room to speak to us, willing to listen to what God has to say to us.
