Pilate’s Verdict 빌라도의 판결

11Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” 12But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed. 15Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” 20Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” 24So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” 25And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
11예수께서 총독 앞에 서시니, 총독이 예수께 물었다. “당신이 유대인의 왕이오?” 그러나 예수께서는 “당신이 그렇게 말하고 있소” 하고 말씀하셨다. 12예수께서는 대제사장들과 장로들이 고발하는 말에는 아무 대답도 하지 않으셨다. 13그 때에 빌라도가 예수께 말하였다. “사람들이 저렇게 여러 가지로 당신에게 불리한 증언을 하는데, 들리지 않소?” 14예수께서 한 마디도, 단 한 가지 고발에도 대답하지 않으시니, 총독은 매우 이상히 여겼다. 15명절 때마다 총독이 무리가 원하는 죄수 하나를 놓아주는 관례가 있었다. 16그런데 그 때에 [예수] 바라바라고 하는 소문난 죄수가 있었다. 17무리가 모였을 때에, 빌라도가 그들에게 말하였다. “여러분은, 내가 누구를 놓아주기를 바라오? 바라바 [예수]요? 그리스도라고 하는 예수요?” 18빌라도는, 그들이 시기하여 예수를 넘겨주었음을 알았던 것이다. 19빌라도가 재판석에 앉아 있을 때에, 그의 아내가 사람을 보내어 말을 전하였다. “당신은 그 옳은 사람에게 아무 관여도 하지 마세요. 지난 밤 꿈에 내가 그 사람 때문에 몹시 괴로웠어요.” 20그러나 대제사장들과 장로들은 무리를 구슬러서, 바라바를 놓아달라고 하고, 예수를 죽이라고 요청하게 하였다. 21총독이 그들에게 물었다. “이 두 사람 가운데서, 누구를 놓아주기를 바라오?” 그들이 말하였다. “바라바요.” 22그 때에 빌라도가 그들에게 말하였다. “그러면 그리스도라고 하는 예수는, 나더러 어떻게 하라는 거요?” 그들이 모두 말하였다. “그를 십자가에 못 박으시오.” 23빌라도가 말하였다. “정말 이 사람이 무슨 나쁜 일을 하였소?” 사람들이 더욱 큰 소리로 외쳤다. “십자가에 못 박으시오.” 24빌라도는, 자기로서는 어찌할 도리가 없다는 것과 또 민란이 일어나려는 것을 보고, 물을 가져다가 무리 앞에서 손을 씻고 말하였다. “나는 이 사람의 피에 대하여 책임이 없으니, 여러분이 알아서 하시오.” 25그러자 온 백성이 대답하였다. “그 사람의 피를 우리와 우리 자손에게 돌리시오.” 26그래서 빌라도는 그들에게, 바라바는 놓아주고, 예수는 채찍질한 뒤에 십자가에 처형하라고 넘겨주었다.

Pilate was amazed by Jesus, who remained silent and unafraid even though he was at risk of being sentenced to death (v. 14). Pilate, who knew that the charge of treason by the Sanhedrin was merely an excuse to kill Jesus and that Jesus has been delivered to him out of envy, tried to release Jesus by using the custom that allowed the release of one prisoner (vv. 15-18). However, when the crowds, who had been instigated and urged by the elders and chief priests, violently opposed this, Pilate, fearing a riot, delivered Jesus to be crucified (vv. 20-26).
빌라도는 사형선고를 받을지도 모르는 상황임에도 두려워하지 않고 담담히 침묵하시는 예수님의 모습에 놀랐습니다(14절). 반역죄로 고소한 산헤드린의 주장이 예수님을 사형시키기 위한 구실일 뿐, 사실 그들이 예수님을 시기해서 넘겨준 것임을 간파한 빌라도는 명절이면 죄인 한 명을 놓아주는 관례를 따라 예수님을 방면하려 합니다(15-18절). 하지만 이미 대제사장들과 장로들에게 충동과 사주를 받은 군중이 거세게 반발하자 민란이 일어날 것을 두려워하여 빌라도는 결국 예수님을 처형하는 데 넘겨주고 맙니다(20-26절).
📚Who is God?
Vv. 15-26 God released the criminal Barabbas from the sentence of death, but like a criminal himself was crucified on the cross. Let’s praise God who, through his grace, placed himself under the curse of the cross for the sake of us, who are like criminals, and saved us from the curse of sin and death.
강도 바라바를 죽음에서 놓이게 하시고, 자신이 강도와 같이 되셔서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으셨습니다. 강도와 같은 나를 위해 십자가 저주 아래 자신을 내어던지시고, 죄와 사망의 저주에서 나를 구하신 은혜를 찬양합시다.
✍️What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 24-26 We don’t stop being responsible for something simply because we avoid it. Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent but still delivered him over to be crucified, for the sake of his own safety. We must not sin knowingly. Do we pursue truth and justice when carrying out the work we have been given, regardless of the consequences?
회피한다고 책임이 없어지는 것은 아닙니다. 빌라도는 예수님이 무죄라는 것을 알고도 자신의 안위를 위해 예수님을 십자가에 넘겨주었습니다. 죄인 줄 알면서도 죄를 지어서는 안 됩니다. 나는 어떠한 결과가 따라올지라도 주어진 임무를 행함에 진실과 정의를 추구하고 있습니까?
