아펜젤러선교사가 1887년에 세운 한국 한국최초의 감리교 신학대학교(당시 배재학당) 류경동총장 일행이 미주 한국선교 140주년을 맞이하여 미동부를 방문, 미주 아펜젤러 선교대회장인 장재웅목사에게 감사패를 전달하는 모습.
141년 전이었다. 그날은 부활절(1885년 4월 5일)이었다. 봄비가 부슬부슬 내리는 인천 제물포항에 임신 2개월 된 부인과 함께 아펜젤러 미국 북감리교 선교사, 그리고 언더우드 미국 북장로교 선교사가 조선 땅에 도착했다. 미국 샌프란시스코에서 출발해 일본을 거쳐 제물포항까지 오는 긴 여정이었다. 가장 먼저 배에서 내린 이는 아펜젤러 선교사의 부인이었다.
낯선 땅 조선의 제물포항에서 아펜젤러와 언더우드는 기도를 했다. 당시 기도문은 기록으로도 남아 있다.
“조선 백성들에게 밝은 빛과 자유를 허락하여 주옵소서”라는 그들의 기도는 결국 꽃을 피웠다.
141 years ago, it was Easter Sunday (April 5, 1885). On that day, under a gentle spring rain at Jemulpo Port in Incheon, Henry Appenzeller of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Horace G. Underwood of the Presbyterian Church arrived on the shores of Joseon, accompanied by Appenzeller’s wife, who was two months pregnant.
It had been a long journey, departing from San Francisco in the United States, passing through Japan, and finally reaching Jemulpo. The very first person to step off the ship was Mrs. Appenzeller.
On that unfamiliar land of Joseon, at Jemulpo Port, Appenzeller and Underwood offered a prayer. That prayer was recorded and has been preserved to this day.
“Grant to the people of Joseon the light and freedom.”
Their prayer, in time, bore fruit.
