“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.” [Luke 24:31]
How often do we walk with Jesus and yet remain blinded by our own “Emmaus road” preoccupations? The disciples were so busy discussing the events of the crucifixion that they missed the Person of the Resurrection standing right next to them. Their eyes were kept from recognizing Him because their hearts were filled with their own preconceived notions of how God should act.
Recognition is not an intellectual achievement; it is a spiritual revelation. It happened “in the breaking of the bread”—in a common, ordinary act of fellowship. When your eyes are opened, you don’t see a new thing; you see the Old Thing in a true light. And why did He disappear? Because once you have recognized Him, you no longer need the crutch of His physical presence. You now have the reality of His life within you. Are you complaining that God is silent or absent today? Perhaps He is walking right beside you in the very “tragedy” you are discussing. Ask Him to open your eyes, not to change your circumstances, but to recognize Him in the midst of them. 우리는 얼마나 자주 예수님과 함께 걸으면서도 우리 자신만의 ‘엠마오로 가는 길’의 근심에 사로잡혀 눈이 가려져 있습니까? 제자들은 십자가 사건이라는 ‘현상’을 토론하느라 너무 바쁜 나머지, 바로 곁에 서 계신 부활의 ‘주님’을 놓치고 말았습니다. 그들의 눈이 주님을 알아보지 못한 이유는, 하나님이 어떻게 행동하셔야 한다는 자신들만의 선입견으로 마음이 가득 차 있었기 때문입니다.
주님을 알아보는 것은 지적인 성취가 아니라 영적인 계시입니다. 그 일은 “떡을 떼실 때”—즉, 아주 평범하고 일상적인 교제의 현장에서 일어났습니다. 당신의 눈이 열릴 때, 당신은 새로운 무언가를 보는 것이 아닙니다. 이미 곁에 있던 분을 진정한 빛 속에서 보게 되는 것입니다. 그런데 왜 주님은 곧바로 사라지셨을까요? 당신이 일단 그분을 알아보고 나면, 더 이상 육체적인 임재라는 지팡이가 필요 없기 때문입니다. 이제 당신 안에는 그분의 생명이라는 실재가 존재합니다. 오늘 하나님이 침묵하시거나 부재하신다고 불평하고 있습니까? 어쩌면 당신이 한창 토론 중인 바로 그 ‘비극’ 한복판에서 그분이 함께 걷고 계실지도 모릅니다. 주님께 눈을 열어달라고 간구하십시오. 상황을 바꿔달라는 기도보다, 상황 속에 계신 그분을 알아보는 것이 더 중요합니다. 챔버스 묵상 중에서
