선(善)과 의(義) 시 15:1-5
1997년 1월 8일 아침 러쉬 아우어에 마이아미에서 지폐운송 차량이 전복되는 사고가 발생했습니다. 현찰 55만 달러가 전복된 차량에서 쏟아져 나와, 길에 있던 사람, 운전자들이 뛰어나와 돈을 주워 달아났습니다.
불과 삽시간이었습니다. 은행은 손실을 만회하기 위해 경찰을 동원하고 특별령을 내렸습니다. 주운 돈을 반납하지 않으면 절도죄로 고발, 처벌할 것이라고 발표했습니다.
그러자 단 2명만 경찰에 출두해서 주운 돈을 반납했습니다. 그중 1명은 6살 짜리 자녀를 둔 애기엄마였습니다. $19.38을 반납했습니다. 그녀는 당시 시급 $5을 받던 판매원이었습니다.
이를 궁금하게 여긴 기자가 그녀에게 주운 돈을 반납한 이유를 묻자 그녀가 대답했습니다. ”6살 짜리 어린 자녀에게 떳떳하게 엄마로 모범을 보이고 싶었어요.” 행함으로 그녀의 선(善)과 의(義)를 보인 것입니다.
갑골문자인 한자에 깊은 의미가 숨겨져 있습니다. 의(義)는 나를 뜻하는 아(我)에 양을 뜻하는 양(羊)을 더한 것으로 ‘나에게 어린 양(예수)가 있다’는 의미를 담고 있습니다.
또한 선(善)은 양(羊)에 불 화(火)와 입 구(口)를 합한 갑골문자로 ‘양을 불에 구워 먹는 것’을 의미합니다. 그 의미를 확대하면 출애굽시에 어린 양을 불에 구워 급히 먹은 성경의 사건을 의미합니다.
이는 예수로 말미암아 우리에게 하나님의 의가 임하고, 그 의로 살아갈 때 우리의 삶 가운데 정직과 공의가 이루어짐을 말씀하고 있습니다.
On the morning of January 8, 1997, during rush hour in Miami, an armored truck carrying cash overturned on a busy roadway. Approximately $550,000 in cash spilled out of the vehicle, scattering across the street. In an instant, pedestrians and drivers rushed forward, grabbing as much money as they could and fleeing the scene.
It happened within moments. In order to recover the loss, the bank enlisted the police and issued a public warning: anyone who failed to return the money would be charged and prosecuted for theft.
In the end, only two people came forward to return the cash they had taken. One of them was a young mother with a six-year-old child. She returned $19.38. At the time, she was working as a sales clerk earning $5 an hour.
A reporter, curious about her decision, asked why she returned the money. She replied: “I wanted to be able to stand before my six-year-old child and be an honest example as a mother.” Through her actions, she demonstrated goodness and righteousness—not merely in words, but in deed.
There is a profound meaning embedded in ancient Chinese characters. The character for righteousness (義) combines the symbol for “self” (我) with that of a “lamb” (羊), conveying the idea that “the Lamb is upon me” or “the Lamb is over me.” For Christians, this beautifully reflects the truth that righteousness comes not from ourselves, but through the Lamb—Jesus Christ.
Similarly, the character for goodness (善) is formed from the symbol for “lamb” (羊) placed above elements that historically represented fire and speech. In its ancient pictographic roots, it evokes the image of a lamb prepared over fire—reminiscent of the Passover in Exodus, when the Israelites roasted the lamb and ate it in haste before their deliverance.
Together, these images point to a deeper spiritual truth: through Jesus, the Lamb of God, the righteousness of God is given to us. And when we live in that righteousness, integrity and justice are expressed in our daily lives.
True righteousness is not merely a legal status—it is a lived reality, revealed in small, unseen choices. Like that mother in Miami, righteousness is shown when we choose what is right, even when no one is watching.
