인생의 절박한 순간에
(In a desperate moment of life)
막 Mark 5:25-34
어떤 신사가 친구가 경영하던 보석상점을 방문했습니다. 친구는 진열장에 있는 보석들을 다 보여주었습니다. 그런데 한 보석이 빛이 나지 않았어요. 그는 친구에게 물었다. “이거 보석이 아닌 것 같아…” 그러자 보석상점을 경영하는 친구가 말했습니다. “아니야. 손에 올려놓고 손을 오므렸다가 잠시 후에 펴봐!” 그분이 손에 넣고 잠시 후에 펴보니 그 보석은 무지개 색깔로 빛나고 있었습니다. 그 보석의 이름이 ‘오팔’이라는 보석입니다.(호주산. 단백석)오팔은 아름다운 빛을 발하기 위해 사람의 손을 필요로 하는 보석입니다.
“내가 하는 모든 일들을 주의 손으로 도우시사(대상 4:9-10)
우리도 주님 손 안에 붙잡히게 되면 ‘오팔’보석처럼 빛나는 인생이 되는 것입니다.
영국의 비평가이며 사상가인 존 러스킨은 「티끌의 윤리」라는 책 속에 “진흙땅은 하나님이 들어 쓰실 때에 무엇이 될 수 있을까요?” 라는 물음을 스스로 던지고 “모래와 흙과 불이 하나님의 손에 붙잡히게 될 때에는 사파이어가 될 수 있으며, 모래가 하나님의 손에 붙잡히게 될 때에는 오팔이 될 수 있다. 또한 맨 흙이 하나님의 손에 붙잡히면 다이아몬드가 될 수 있다.”고 대답했습니다.
우리는 모래와 흙과 진흙 같은 깨어지고 부서지기 쉬운 인생이지만 하나님이 우리와 함께 하시고 하나님 손에 우리가 잡혀서 산다면 우리는 무엇이든지 될 수가 있습니다. 우리가 잘나서 그렇게 되는 것이 아니라 우리 안에 계신 하나님이 너무나 위대하시기 때문에 하나님은 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자손이 되게 할 수 있고 아론의 말라빠진 지팡이에도 싹이 나고 잎이 피고 꽃이 피고 열매를 맺을 수가 있게 하시는 것입니다.
오늘 본문에서 예수님은 회당장의 절박한 요청을 듣고 그와 함께 병중에 있는 회당장의 딸에게로 발걸음을 옮기십니다. 그때 예수님의 명성이 높아져 어디로 가시든지 사람들이 엄청나게 모여 들었습니다. 너무나 모여들어 예수님은 무리들 틈에서 몸도 제대로 움직이거나 가눌수가 없으셨습니다.
그런데 회당장 야이로의 집으로 가는 가운데 그 혼잡한 틈을 타 한 여인이 나타납니다. 12년동안 혈루증을 앓던 여인이었습니다. 혈루증. 피가 멈추지 않는 불치병, 그녀는 12년동안 병을 앓았는데 12살의 야이로의 딸과 우연히 일치됩니다. 이스라엘 민족에게 12는 완전수였기에 오랫동안 앓았다는 것을 상징합니다. 26절에 보면 치료하는 동안 독성이 강한 약들을 복용함으로써 부작용을 일으켜 병세가 악화되었습니다. 당시 혈루증 치료방법은 10개나 되었는데 대부분 과학적 근거가 없는 미신적인 것이었습니다. 더욱이 그녀는 재산을 다 허비하고 사람들과 가족들로부터 완전히 격리되었습니다. 이제 마지막 남은 한가지 희망은 예수님을 만나는 것이었습니다(막5:27)
예수님의 소문을 듣고 뒤에서 예수님의 옷(가장자리나 옷자락에 매단 옷단)에 손을 가만히 댑니다. 당시 율법에 의하면 혈루증을 가진자는 부정한 자로 간주되어(레15:25)격리되어 지냈습니다. 그래서 이 여인은 군중들 틈바구니를 뚫고 예수님뒤로가서 옷을 몰래 뒤에서 만진 것입니다. 그런데 놀라운 사실은 옷자락 술은 옷의 한부분에 지나지 않았고 그것을 만져야만 나을 것이라는 생각도 유치한 것처럼 보였지만 “내가 예수님의 옷에 손만 대어도 나음을 받을 것이다”라는 생각과 믿음을 가지고 만졌을 때 혈루근원이 마르면서 놀라운 치유의 역사가 일어나게 됩니다.(29절)
결국 이 혈루증 여인은 이 병을 통해 예수님을 만나게 되고 치유와 구원을 받게 되었습니다. 예수님은 이 여인의 믿음을 보시고 이렇게 선포하십니다.
“딸아 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였으니 평안히 가라 네 병에서 놓여 건강할지어다(막5:34)”
예수님은 그녀의 육신적인 질병을 고쳐주셨을뿐 아니라 영혼까지 구원하셨습니다. 정신적 불안을 제거하셨습니다.(평안히 가라) 영속적인 건강의 축복까지 주셨습니다.(병에서 완전히 벗어나 건강해져라) 이 모든 것이 가능했던 것은 옷만 만져도 나을 수 있다고 믿은 단순하고 겸손하고 용기있는 믿음때문이었습니다.
역사가 유세비우스에 의하면 이 여인은 파네아스출신의 이방인 베로니카라는 이름의 여인이었다고 합니다. 예수님께서 십자가를 지고 가실 때 얼굴을 닦을 수건을 드렸는데 그 수건에 예수님의 얼굴이 그려졌다고 합니다.
Mark 5:25-34
A gentleman visited a friend’s jewelry store. His friend showed him all the gems on display. But one gem didn’t shine. He asked his friend, “I don’t think this is a gem…” The friend, who ran the jewelry store, replied, “No. Put it in your hand, close your hand, and then open it again!” When he opened it again after a while, the gem was shining with rainbow colors. The gem was called “opal.” (Australian opal) Opal is a gem that requires human hands to shine beautifully.
“Your hand guides all my works” (1 Chronicles 4:9-10)
When we are held in the Lord’s hands, our lives will shine like the opal.
In his book “The Ethic of Dust,” British critic and philosopher John Ruskin asked, “What can clay become when God uses it?” He asked himself the question, “When sand, earth, and fire are caught in God’s hands, they can become sapphires, and when sand is caught in God’s hands, it can become opal.” He answered, “Even bare dirt, held in God’s hands, can become a diamond.”
We are fragile and fragile lives, like sand, dirt, and mud. But if God is with us and we live in His hands, we can become anything. It’s not because we are good, but because the God within us is so great that He can make even these stones become children of Abraham, and even Aaron’s withered staff can sprout, sprout leaves, bloom flowers, and bear fruit.
In today’s passage, Jesus hears the desperate request of the synagogue leader and goes with him to visit the synagogue leader’s daughter, who was ill. His fame spread, and wherever He went, crowds of people flocked. So many people gathered that Jesus could barely move or control himself amidst the crowds.
Then, on his way to the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader, a woman appeared in the midst of the chaos. She had suffered from an issue of blood for twelve years. Hemorrhage, an incurable disease that prevented the flow of blood. She was a woman with a chronic illness. She had been ill for twelve years, and coincidentally, she coincided with the twelve-year-old daughter of Jairus. Twelve was a perfect number for the Israelites, symbolizing a long illness. Verse 26 shows that during her treatment, she took toxic medications that had side effects and worsened her condition. At the time, there were ten different treatments for bleeding, most of which were superstitious and lacked scientific basis. Furthermore, she had squandered all her wealth and was completely isolated from people and her family. Her only remaining hope was to meet Jesus (Mark 5:27).
Hearing about Jesus, she quietly touched the hem of his garment (the fringe or hem of his garment) from behind. According to the law of the time, a person with a bleeding disorder was considered unclean (Leviticus 15:25) and was thus isolated. Therefore, this woman pushed her way through the crowd, sneaked behind Jesus, and secretly touched his garment from behind. The surprising thing was that the fringe was merely a part of the garment, and the idea that she would be healed only by touching it seemed childish. But she said, “I am healed.” When she touched Jesus’ garment with the thought and faith that “if I just touch his clothes, I will be healed,” the source of her bleeding dried up, and a miraculous healing occurred (verse 29).
Ultimately, this woman with an issue of blood met Jesus through her illness and received healing and salvation.
Jesus saw this woman’s faith and declared:
“Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace and be healed of your disease (Mark 5:34)”
Jesus not only healed her physical illness, but also saved her soul. He removed her mental anxiety (go in peace) and gave her the blessing of eternal health (be completely healed of your disease). All of this was possible because of her simple, humble, and courageous faith that she could be healed just by touching her clothes.
According to the historian Eusebius, this woman was a foreigner from Paneas named Veronica, who had been there for six years. When Jesus was carrying the cross, she gave him a towel to wipe his face, and it is said that Jesus’ face was drawn on the towel.
