뉴욕시 블르크린 교외에 처음 목회를 시작하는 목사님부부가 폐쇄되었던 교회를 다시 시작하라는 교단의 명을 받고 설레는 마음으로 10월에 부임하였습니다. 그 교회건물은 오랫동안 사용되지않아 매우 낡았고 수리할 곳이 많았습니다. 목사님부부는 크리스마스 이브에 첫 예배를 드리기로작정하고 강단을 다듬고 페인트칠을 하고 벽의 회칠을 하는 등 열심히 일한 결과 예정보다 이른 12월 18일에 모든 일을 마쳤습니다.
그런데 바로 그 다음날, 지독한 눈보라와 광풍이 이틀이나 계속되었습니다. 21일에 교회에 들렀던목사님은 물이 새는 지붕과 특히 강대상 바로 뒤로 가로 2m, 세로 6m 가량의 벽이 무너져 내린 것을 보자 어찌할 바를 몰랐습니다. 목사님은 바닥과 벽을 청소하면서 예배를 연기해야 되지 않을까생각하였습니다.
목사님은 집으로 돌아오면서 길가의 자선바자회를 보고 잠시 들러 보기로 하였습니다. 목사님은그곳에서 매우 아름다운 옅은 상아색 바탕에 가운데 십자가를 수놓은 우아한 식탁보를 발견한 순간‘아! 이것으로 무너져 내린 강대상 벽을 덮을 수 있겠구나’ 생각하고 그것을 사서 급히 교회로 되돌아 갔습니다.
그때 다시 눈이 내리기 시작하였는데, 교회 앞 버스정류장에서 어떤 할머니가 버스를 놓치고 안타까워하는 모습을 본 목사님은 다음 버스가 올 때까지 45분을 기다려야 하고 밖이 매우 춥기 때문에할머니에게 교회 안에서 기다리시라고 권했습니다.
목사님은 사다리와 망치를 가지고 식탁보로 무너진 벽을 가리는 작업을 하였는데 식탁보는 놀라울 정도로 규격이 잘 맞고 수놓인 십자가로 인해 교회분위기에 완벽하게 어울렸습니다. 그때 뒷자리에 앉아 계시던 할머니가 걸어 나오시면서 ‘목사님, 그것을 어디에서 구하셨습니까?’하고 물었습니다. 목사님이 ‘자선바자회에서 구입했습니다’라고 하자, ‘혹시 끝에 EBG라고 수놓은 글씨가 있나요?’라고 되 물으셨습니다. 목사님은 글씨를 발견하였고 그것은 할머니의 이름 첫 글자들이며 그식탁보는 할머니가 35년 전 오스트리아에서 직접 만들었다는 것을 알게되었습니다.
할머니는 오스트리아에서 매우 부유하게 살다가 나찌에 의해 감옥에 가게 되었고 그후로 남편과 소식이 두절되었고 지금은 미국에서 살고 있었습니다. 그런 사실을 알게된 목사님은 식탁보를 돌려드리려 하였으나 할머니는 극구 사양하였습니다. 그래서 목사님은 적어도 할머니를 집에까지 바래다 드리는 것이 도리라고 생각되어 교회에서 꽤 먼 곳의 집에 모셔다 드리면서 할머니가 단지 그날하루 파출부로 블르크린에 오신 것을 알게 되었습니다.
크리스마스 이브 예배는 하나님의 놀라운 축복이었습니다. 교회는 거의 가득 찼고 찬양, 기도, 설교 등 모든 것이 은혜로 넘쳤습니다. 예배가 끝난 후 목사님 부부는 신도들을 배웅하였는데 모두들이 교회에 출석하겠다고 하였습니다. 그런데 이웃에 사시는 할아버지 한 분이 아직도 자리에 앉아강대상을 뚫어져라 바라보고 계셨습니다. 할아버지는 ‘목사님, 어디에서 저 식탁보를 구하셨습니까? 저것은 예전에 제 부인이 만들었던 것과 너무 똑 같습니다.’라고 물어 오셨습니다.
목사님은 할아버지가 예전에 오스트리아에서 살았고 나찌에 의해 감옥에 가면서 35년 전 부인과헤어지게 된 것을 듣게 되었습니다. 목사님은 ‘할아버지, 저희와 잠시 드라이브 하실까요?’하면서며칠 전 할머니를 모셔다 드렸던 집으로 향했습니다. 목사님부부는 할아버지를 부축하여 3층 아파트로 올라가 문을 두드렸습니다. 그곳에서 목사님부부는 상상할 수 없는 생애 최고의 크리스마스가족상봉 장면을 목격할 수 있었습니다.
“하나님은 신비한 방법으로도 역사하십니다. 그분의 사랑은 항상 우리와 함께 하고 그분의 약속은 진실하며 그분은 늘 우리를 인도하고 보호하십니다. 여러분의 인생길에 어려움이 있을 때 그분께 기도하세요. 그러면 그분이 나머지를 책임져 주십니다.
The Tablecloth (True Story)
A pastor and his wife, who were starting their ministry in a suburb of Brooklyn, New York City, received a mandate from their denomination to reopen a closed church. They arrived in October with excited hearts. The church building had been unused for a long time and was very old, requiring many repairs. The pastor and his wife decided to hold their first service on Christmas Eve and worked diligently, cleaning the pulpit, painting, and plastering the walls. They finished all the work earlier than planned, on December 18th.
However, the very next day, a terrible blizzard and strong winds raged for two days. When the pastor visited the church on the 21st, he was at a loss for what to do when he saw the leaking roof and, especially, a section of the wall behind the pulpit, about 2 meters wide and 6 meters high, had collapsed. As he cleaned the floor and walls, he wondered if he should postpone the service.
On his way home, the pastor saw a charity bazaar on the roadside and decided to stop by. There, he discovered a very beautiful, elegant tablecloth with a cross embroidered in the center on a light ivory background. He immediately thought, “Ah! I can use this to cover the collapsed wall behind the pulpit!”
He bought it and hurried back to the church. It had started snowing again, and at the bus stop in front of the church, he saw an elderly woman who had missed her bus and looked distressed. Since she would have to wait 45 minutes for the next bus and it was very cold outside, the pastor invited her to wait inside the church.
The pastor used a ladder and a hammer to cover the collapsed wall with the tablecloth. To his surprise, the tablecloth fit perfectly, and the embroidered cross made it blend perfectly with the church’s atmosphere. Then, an elderly woman sitting in the back row walked forward and asked, “Pastor, where did you get that?” The pastor replied, “I bought it at a charity bazaar.” She then asked, “Does it happen to have the letters EBG embroidered on the end?”
The pastor found the letters, which were the initials of the woman’s name, and realized that the tablecloth was something she had made herself in Austria 35 years earlier. The woman had lived a very wealthy life in Austria before being imprisoned by the Nazis, after which she lost contact with her husband and was now living in the United States.
Upon learning this, the pastor tried to return the tablecloth, but the woman adamantly refused. So, the pastor felt it was his duty to at least drive her home, which was quite far from the church. During the drive, he learned that she had only come to Brooklyn that day to work as a cleaning lady.
The Christmas Eve service was a wonderful blessing from God. The church was almost full, and everything—the singing, the prayers, the sermon—was overflowing with grace. After the service, the pastor and his wife said goodbye to the parishioners, all of whom said they would attend the church regularly. However, an elderly man who lived nearby was still sitting in his seat, staring intently at the pulpit. He asked, “Pastor, where did you get that tablecloth? It looks exactly like one my wife made a long time ago.” The pastor learned that the man had also lived in Austria and had been separated from his wife 35 years earlier when he was imprisoned by the Nazis.
The pastor said, “Sir, would you like to go for a short drive with us?” and headed towards the house where he had taken the elderly woman a few days earlier. The pastor and his wife helped the grandfather up to the third-floor apartment and knocked on the door. There, the pastor and his wife witnessed an unimaginable Christmas family reunion, the best of their lives.
“God works in mysterious ways. His love is always with us, His promises are true, and He always guides and protects us. When you face difficulties in your life, pray to Him, and He will take care of the rest.”
