대강절(Advent)은 오심을 뜻하는 라틴어 Adventus에서 온 말입니다. 한자어로는 ‘기다릴 대(待)’와 ‘내릴 강(降)’ 자로, 하늘에서 내려오실 분, 곧 예수 그리스도를 기다린다는 뜻입니다.
교회는 대강절 네 주간을 지내며, 성탄을 기다리고 준비합니다. 대강절 기간 교회는 매 주일 한 개씩 초를 밝히며 예수 그리스도의 오심을 기념하고, 성탄 전야 혹은 성탄절에 다섯 번째 초, ‘그리스도의 초’를 밝힙니다.
대강절의 촛불 점화는, 점점 어두워지는 세상 속에서 참 빛으로 오실 예수님을 기다리는 우리의 마음과 소망을 상징하는 예식입니다.
매주 다음과 같은 의미의 초를 밝힙니다:
대강절 첫째 주일: 소망의 초 (보라색 또는 청색)
대강절 둘째 주일: 평화의 초 (보라색 또는 청색)
대강절 셋째 주일: 기쁨의 초 (분홍색)
대강절 넷째 주일: 사랑의 초 (보라색 또는 청색)
성탄절 전야/성탄절: 그리스도의 초 (흰색)

Advent Sundays
The word Advent comes from the Latin word Adventus, meaning “coming.” In Korean, it is expressed as “Daegang” (待降), meaning “waiting for the one who comes down from heaven”—none other than Jesus Christ.
During the four Sundays of Advent, the church prepares for the coming of Christ at Christmas. Each week, one candle is lit to symbolize the growing anticipation of Christ’s arrival, culminating with the lighting of the Christ candle on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
The lighting of the Advent candles is a symbolic act of preparation and hope, as we await the coming light of Christ in a world that grows ever darker.
Each candle has a distinct meaning:
First Sunday of Advent:
The candle of hope (Purple or Blue)
Second Sunday of Advent: The candle of peace (Purple or Blue)
Third Sunday of Advent: The candle of joy (Pink)
Fourth Sunday of Advent: The candle of love (Purple or Blue
Christmas Eve/Day: The Christ Candle (White)
The candles may be lit by the worship leader or by a designated individual or family from the congregation.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness, a light has dawned. (Isaiah 9:2 NIV)
Today, we gather in waiting, looking to the light of the Lord who has come to bring hope and salvation.
Let us draw near to God with sincere hearts and the full assurance that faith brings. (Hebrews 10:22 NIV)
God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth. (John 4:24 NIV) As we wait for the Lord, the Light of Hope, let us begin our worship with thanksgiving and joy, offering ourselves fully to him.
OPENING PRAYER
God, who is worthy of all praise and worship, on this first Sunday of Advent, we come before you with hearts filled with hope, longing for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, who took on human flesh and came to dwell among us.
Holy Spirit, come and dwell in our midst today. Set apart our hearts and bodies as holy before you, and open our eyes to see your light shining in this dark and troubled world. May our songs, our prayers, and our offerings rise before you as a pleasing fragrance.
Renew our strength and restore our hope through this worship, so that we may live each day in faith, waiting eagerly for the coming again of our Lord.
