Tear down the great mountain within me. Zechariah 4:6-7

Tear down the great mountain within me.

Zechariah 4:6-7

After returning from the Babylonian captivity, the Jewish people pushed forward with rebuilding the temple, but faced numerous difficulties. Due to economic hardship, national division, and foreign interference, construction was halted for 16 years.

At this time, God showed Zechariah a vision of a pure gold lampstand. When Zechariah asked God about the meaning of this vision, God said, “It is by my Spirit alone.” “Not by might, nor by power, but by the Holy Spirit” (Zechariah 4:6) was the first word.

The second word God gave to Zechariah, who asked for the meaning of this, was Zechariah 4:7a, “What are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain.”

What is the great mountain here? What is the great mountain before me? It is the problems I cannot solve on my own. It is the people who mock and persecute me, the financial difficulties I cannot solve on my own, the diseases I cannot cure, the mire and pit I cannot escape from.

Here, we need to consider the meaning of the name “Zerubbabel.” It means “born in Babylon.” His parents were taken captive, but he was born in Babylon. Compared to his parents, he was familiar with Babylon, spoke the language well, and was more comfortable in every way.

Yet, when he was commanded to go to Jerusalem, the land of his parents, a place he had never visited, he obeyed the command. The anointing of the Holy Spirit poured down on his life, like an olive tree. Connected and continually filled with the Holy Spirit, we overcame countless mountains, completed the 1,500-kilometer journey, and finally rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem.

Like Zerubbabel, we too were born into “Babylon” (the world of sin).

Born as sinners in a world of sin, we lived without God, and that world of sin was comfortable and good. However, God chose us, made us His children, and called us to heaven, to the spiritual Jerusalem.

We obeyed, saying, “Amen,” and set out on that path. Spiritually filled, we follow God toward heaven, our eternal Jerusalem. God goes before us on our journey of faith, and just as He leveled the mountains before Zerubbabel, He also leveled the mountains we encounter in our lives.

Have you stopped because of a large mountain? What mountain blocks your path? Are you frustrated, unable to overcome, move, or turn around?

To level that mountain, the first step is not to drive a bulldozer into the mountain, but to allow the Holy Spirit to freely move within you. It is receiving the anointing and filling of the Holy Spirit to do the work.

Stanley Jones, the most famous missionary to India, made the astonishing statement in his book, “The Song of Ascents,” “When I believed in Jesus, God gave me two gifts: being born again and being filled with the Holy Spirit. Being born again brought me to the kingdom of God, and being filled with the Holy Spirit brought the kingdom of God to me.”

If you are filled with the Holy Spirit, the kingdom of God enters you. Whether you are crossing a rugged mountain or a rough field, in a hut or a palace, you can say, “Wherever I am with my Lord Jesus, it is heaven.”

Don’t look at the rugged mountain before you, but look to God who is between you and the mountain. When you look to Him, even the rough path appears smooth, and even the highest mountain appears flat.

Without being filled with the Holy Spirit, even a small hill looks like Mount Everest,
but when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, even Mount Everest seems lower than the hills in your neighborhood.

The power of the Holy Spirit and When you receive authority, you gain the strength to climb mountains as if they were flat ground, even if they don’t. So, I hope you always strive to be filled with the Holy Spirit. God not only gives those filled with the Holy Spirit the strength to climb mountains, but He also cuts them down.

I pray that you will be filled with the Holy Spirit to first bring down the “mountain within me” before bringing down the “mountain in front of me.”

When we first bring down the mountain within me through faith, God, who makes paths smooth and fulfills His promises, will go before us, leveling all the mountains before us and making them flat ground. Shalom!
