고통의 시간속에서 싹튼 사랑 (창 39:1-3)
철부지인 요셉은 이후 오랜 고통의 시간을 겪게 됩니다. 아무리 철부지라해도 그에게 닥친 고통은 가혹했습니다.
그는 형들로부터 죽임을 당할 뻔했습니다. 결국 노예로 팔려 갑니다. 노예로 지내다가 누명을 쓰고 감옥에 들어갑니다. 고통은 연거푸 옵니다.
나락 밑에 나락이 있습니다. 그는 점점 더 최악으로 밀려가는 듯했습니다. 꿈을 품었지만 눈치 없던 어린 요셉과 강대국이었던 애굽의 총리가 된 요셉 사이에는 말할 수 없는 고통과 절망의 시간이 있었습니다.
그 이야기가 창세기 39장에 걸쳐 나타나 있습니다. 그런데 여기서 계속 등장하는 문구가 있습니다
“여호와께서 요셉과 함께하시므로 그가 형통한 자가 되어 그의 주인 애굽 사람의 집에 있으니 그의 주인이 여호와께서 그와 함께하심을 보며 또 여호와께서 그의 범사에 형통하게 하심을 보았더라 –창세기 39:2-3-”
“이에 요셉의 주인이 그를 잡아 옥에 가두니 그 옥은 왕의 죄수를 가두는곳이었더라 요셉이 옥에 갇혔으나 여호와께서 요셉과 함께하시고 그에게 인자를 더하사 간수장에게 은혜를 받게 하시매 간수장이 옥중 죄수를 다요셉의 손에 맡기므로 그 제반 사무를 요셉이 처리하고 간수장은 그의 손에 맡긴 것을 무엇이든지 살펴보지 아니하였으니 이는 여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하심이라 여호와께서 그를 범사에 형통하게 하셨더라 –창세기39:20-23-“
여호와께서 요셉과 함께하셨다. “여호와께서 요셉과 함께하심으로”라는 구절이 창세기 39장에만 4번 나옵니다
그런데 창세기 39장에 무슨 내용이 있습니까 ? 참혹하고 고통스러운 노예의 시간과 감옥의 시간입니다. 요셉이 꿈꾸는 자이었을 때는 그 구절이 없습니다. 심지어 총리가 된 다음에도 없습니다.
고통과 상실의 시간 속에서 하나님께서 요셉과 함께하십니다. 요셉은 정말이지 하나님밖에 없었습니다. 하나님께서 요셉이 노예일 때 그를 지키시고 붙드셨습니다. 넘어질 때 일으키셨습니다. 마음을 만지고 위로하셨습니다. 그의 눈물을 닦아주셨습니다. 아무도 사랑해주지 않는 죄수 요셉을 하나님이 사랑하셨습니다. 그에게는 고통과 하나님의 사랑이 있었습니다. 이 둘 사이에서 요셉은 철들기 시작합니다.
고통만 있으면 사람은 삐뚤어집니다. 반면 사랑만 있으면 철부지가 됩니다. 그러나 고통 속에서 함께하시는 하나님의 사랑이 우리를 철들게 하는 것입니다.
고통 속에서 함께하시는 사랑으로 인해 우리는 주님의 마음을 품고 그 마음을 읽어내는 성숙한 자녀가 되어 가는 것입니다.
God’s love makes you wise
The reckless Joseph went through a long period of suffering. No matter how reckless he was, the suffering he faced was severe. He almost got killed by his brothers. He was eventually sold into slavery.
He was falsely accused and sent to prison. The suffering continued. There was a pit under the pit. He seemed to be pushed further and further into the worst. Between the young Joseph who had dreams but was clueless and Joseph who became the prime minister of Egypt, a powerful nation, there was a time of unspeakable suffering and despair.
That story appears throughout Genesis 39. But here is a phrase that keeps appearing
“The Lord was with Joseph, and he prospered, and was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did prosper.-Genesis 39:2-3-”
“So Joseph’s master took him and put him in the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. While Joseph was in the prison, the Lord was with Joseph, and he showed him kindness, and he gained favor with the keeper of the prison. The keeper of the prison committed all the prisoners in the prison to Joseph’s care. Joseph was in charge of all that was in the prison. The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under his care, because the Lord was with Joseph. The Lord made him prosper in all that he did. -Genesis 39:20-23-“
The Lord was with Joseph. The phrase “The Lord was with Joseph” appears 4 times in Genesis 39 alone.
But what is in Genesis 39? It is the miserable and painful time of slavery and prison. There is no such phrase when Joseph was a dreamer. It is not even there after he became prime minister.
In times of suffering and loss God is with Joseph. Joseph really had no one but God. God protected and supported Joseph when he was a slave. He raised him when he fell. He touched his heart and comforted him. He wiped away his tears. God loved Joseph, a prisoner whom no one loved. He had suffering and God’s love. Between these two, Joseph began to grow up.
When there is only suffering, people become crooked. On the other hand, when there is only love, people become immature. However, God’s love that accompanies us in our suffering makes us mature.
Because of the love that accompanies us in our suffering, we become mature children who embrace the Lord’s heart and read His heart.
