뉴욕의 유명 식당 요리사에게 딸이 있었다. 그 딸은 평소 불평이 많았다. “내 인생은 왜 이렇게 모든 것이 어렵고 힘들까?” 항상 이렇게 투덜대는 딸을 요리사는 어느날 부엌으로 데려갔다.
오븐 위에 세 개의 남비를 올려 놓고 물을 끓이기 시작했다. 첫 번째 남비에 당근, 두 번째 남비에 계란, 세 번째 남비에 커피 콩을 펄펄 끓는 물에 넣었다. 20분 후에 요리사는 각 남비에서 당근, 계란, 커피를 꺼내 세 개의 그릇에 담았다.
그리고는 딸에게 물었다. “그릇들 안에 무엇이 있니?” “당근, 계란, 커피…” 아버지는 딸에게 말한다.
“당근을 만져 보고, 계란 껍질을 벗기고, 커피를 마셔 보거라.” 딸은 당근이 아주 연하게 익어 있고, 삶은 계란은 단단하고, 커피 맛은 아주 향기롭다고 대답했다. “그런데 아버지, 왜 이런 걸 제게 물으세요?”
“딸아, 이 세 가지는 모두 다 똑같이 펄펄 끓는 뜨거운 물 속에 들어갔다. 그러나 그들은 각기 다르게 반응하고 다른 결과들을 나타냈다. 당근은 원래 단단했지만, 뜨거운 물 속에서 연하고 약해 졌다. 계란은 본래 아주 깨어지기 쉬웠지만, 뜨거운 물 속에서 단단해 졌다. 커피 콩은 뜨거운 물 속에 들어가서 아예 물 자체를 변화시켜 향기로운 커피를 만들었다.”
아버지는 딸의 얼굴을 응시하며 물었다. “이 세 가지 중에 너는 어디에 속한다고 생각하니? 어려운 환경에 들어갔을 때, 단단했다가 약해진 당근에 속하니? 아니면 깨어지기 쉬웠지만 단단해진 삶은 계란에 속하니? 아니면 뜨거운 물을 아예 커피 물로 바꾼 커피 콩에 속하니?”
딸은 아버지가 부엌에서 교훈해 주신 심오한 교육에 크게 깨달음을 얻고, 그 후부터는 어떤 어렵고 뜨거운 환경이 오더라도 불평하지 않고, 계란이나 커피처럼 살겠다고 결심하였다.
성경 속에는 펄펄 끓고 어려운 역경 가운데서도 굳건하게 신앙을 지킨 인물들이 많이 나온다. 그 중에 이방 여인이었던 룻의 모습이 우뚝 서 있다. 성경 책 이름들 가운데, 여성의 이름을 딴 책이 오직 두 개가 있는데 룻기와 에스더서이다. 그 중에서도 룻기가 특별한 것은 유대인 히브리어 성경 속에서 이방 여인의 이름을 제목으로 가진 유일한 책이기 때문이다. 에스더는 유대 여인이었다.
하나님의 선민인 유대인들의 성경 책 이름에 여성의 이름, 더군다나 이방 여인 룻의 이름이 이렇게 붙여진 것은 대단히 희귀한 일이다. 그러나 거기에는 깊은 구속사적인 의미가 있다. 곧 하나님께서 유대인이나 이방인이나 차별없이 구원하시려는 원대한 구속사적 계획을 밝혀주고 있는 것이다. 이방 모압 여인이었던 룻이 유대인들이 존귀하게 여기는 다윗 왕의 증조모가 되고, 후에 다윗의 자손(마 1:1)으로서 인류의 구주로 오신 예수님의 탄생 족보에 조상으로 이름이 올려진 것은 아주 깊은 구속사적 의미를 담고 있는 것이다.
룻의 인생은 평탄하지 않았다. 이방 여인으로서 모압 땅으로 이민 온 유대인 남편 기룐을 만나 국제 결혼을 했지만 얼마 후 과부가 되었다. 더군다나 룻은, 이방 객지 모압 땅에서 남편과 두 아들을 모두 졸지에 잃고 홀로 남은 과부 시어머니 나오미를 봉양하며 무척 척박한 삶을 살아야 했다. 그러나 룻은 자기 연민에 빠져 불행한 운명을 믿는 여인이 아니었다.
오직 하나님만을 굳게 의지하는 불굴의 신앙 여성이었다.
슬픔 속에 지내던 유대인 시어머니 나오미는 고국 유다 땅 베들레헴으로 돌아가려 했다. 이때 룻은 얼마든지 자기 본향인 모압 나라에 남을 수 있었고 자신이 과거에 섬겼던 이방신으로 돌아갈 수도 있었다. 그러나 그는 하나님을 붙들고 시어머니와 함께 했다.
이러한 룻의 불굴의 신앙을 성경은 이렇게 묘사하고 있다. “어머니의 백성이 나의 백성이 되고 어머니의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 되시리이다”(룻 1:16). 이것은 룻이 이방 모압의 우상을 버리고, 여호와 하나님을 선택한 위대한 개종 선언이자 확고한 신앙 고백이었다.
그런데 막상 시어머니 나오미와 함께 유다 땅에 왔지만, 룻의 육신적 삶이 고통스럽기는 마찬가지였다. 매일 들판에 나가서 허리가 부스러지도록 땅에 떨어진 이삭을 줏어다가 끼니를 겨우 메꾸는 힘든 삶의 연속이었다. 낯선 이국 땅에 와서 나이 많은 시어머니를 봉양하며 살아가는 과부 며느리 룻의 심적, 육신적 고달픔, 외로움은 이루 말할 수 없었을 것이다. 그러나 룻은 그 어려운 환경에 결코 굴복하지 않고 오직 하나님만을 붙들었다.
성경 학자들은 이러한 룻의 별명을 “a clinger, a hugger, and a sticker”라고 부르면서 룻의 불굴의 신앙을 칭송하고 있다. 그들이 룻에게 그러한 별명을 붙인 것은, 룻의 신앙이 아주 강력한 접착제처럼 하나님께 너무도 단단히 붙어 있었기 때문이다.
룻은 펄펄 끓는 남비의 물 속에서도, 더욱 단단해 지는 계란과 그 뜨거운 물을 향기로운 커피로 변화시키는 커피 콩과 같은 여성이었다. 그는 어떠한 역경가운데서도 오직 전능하신 하나님만을 굳게 붙들고 승리하여 결국 인류의 구주 예수님의 육신적 조상의 반열에 포함되는 영광을 누리게 되었던 것이다.
영어에 이런 속담이 있다. “Tough times never last, tough people do.” 터프한 시간은 결코 오래 가지 않으나, 터프한 사람은 오래 간다는 말이다. 많은 사람이 신앙을 갖지만 터프한 시간이 올 때, 모든 사람이 그 터프한 환경을 믿음으로 이기고 오래 신앙을 지키는 것은 아니다. 어떤 사람은 터프 타임에 쉽게 굴복하고 어떤 사람은 터프 타임 속에서도 오래 인내하고 승리한다. 이런 의미에서, 터프한 환경을 이긴 룻의 불굴의 신앙은 터프한 오늘을 살아가는 우리 모두에게 큰 교훈과 도전을 던져 주고 있는 것이다.
“저녁에는 울음이 깃들일지라도 아침에는 기쁨이 오리로다”(시 30:5).
A famous New York restaurant chef had a daughter. She was always complaining. “Why is everything in my life so difficult and hard?” One day, the chef took her to the kitchen.
He put three pots on the oven and started boiling water. He put carrots in the first pot, eggs in the second pot, and coffee beans in the third pot. After 20 minutes, the chef took carrots, eggs, and coffee out of each pot and put them in three bowls.
Then he asked his daughter, “What’s in those bowls?” “Carrots, eggs, coffee…” The father said to his daughter.
“Feel the carrots, peel the eggs, and drink the coffee.” The daughter replied that the carrots were very soft, the boiled eggs were hard, and the coffee tasted very fragrant. “But, father, why are you asking me this?”
“Daughter, all three of these things went into the boiling hot water equally. However, they reacted differently and showed different results. Carrots were originally hard, but became soft and weak in hot water. Eggs were originally very fragile, but became hard in hot water. Coffee beans went into hot water and changed the water itself to make fragrant coffee.”
The father stared at his daughter’s face and asked, “Which of these three do you think you belong to? Do you belong to the carrots that were hard and then became weak when they entered a difficult environment? Or to the boiled eggs that were fragile but became hard? Or to the coffee beans that changed hot water into coffee water?”
The daughter was greatly enlightened by the profound education her father gave her in the kitchen, and from then on, she resolved not to complain and to live like eggs or coffee, no matter what difficult and hot environment she encountered.
There are many characters in the Bible who firmly maintained their faith even in the midst of boiling and difficult adversity. Among them, the figure of Ruth, a foreign woman, stands out. Among the names of the books of the Bible, there are only two books named after women: Ruth and Esther. Among them, the book of Ruth is special because it is the only book in the Jewish Hebrew Bible with the name of a Gentile woman as its title. Esther was a Jewish woman.
It is extremely rare for a book of the Bible of the Jews, God’s chosen people, to be named after a woman, especially Ruth, a Gentile woman. However, it has a profound redemptive-historical meaning. It reveals God’s grand redemptive plan to save both Jews and Gentiles without discrimination. Ruth, a Moabite woman, became the great-grandmother of King David, whom the Jews respect, and later became the ancestor of Jesus, the savior of mankind, as a descendant of David (Matthew 1:1). This has a very profound redemptive-historical meaning.
Ruth’s life was not smooth. As a Gentile woman, she met a Jewish husband, Chilion, who immigrated to the land of Moab, and married him internationally, but soon became a widow. Moreover, Ruth had to live a very poor life supporting her widowed mother-in-law Naomi, who had suddenly lost her husband and two sons in the foreign land of Moab. However, Ruth was not a woman who believed in her unfortunate fate by wallowing in self-pity.
She was a woman of unwavering faith who relied only on God.
Her Jewish mother-in-law Naomi, who was living in sorrow, wanted to return to Bethlehem in Judah. At that time, Ruth could have stayed in her home country of Moab and returned to the foreign gods she had served in the past. However, she held on to God and stayed with her mother-in-law.
The Bible describes Ruth’s unwavering faith as follows: “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16). This was a great declaration of conversion and a firm confession of faith in which Ruth abandoned the idols of the foreign Moabites and chose Jehovah God.
However, even though she came to the land of Judah with her mother-in-law Naomi, Ruth’s physical life was just as painful. Every day, she went out to the fields and picked up the fallen ears of grain to barely make ends meet. The mental and physical hardships and loneliness of Ruth, a widowed daughter-in-law who came to a foreign land and lived while supporting her elderly mother-in-law, must have been indescribable. However, Ruth never gave in to those difficult circumstances and held on only to God.
Bible scholars praise Ruth’s unwavering faith by calling her nicknames “a clinger, a hugger, and a sticker.” The reason they gave her such nicknames was because Ruth’s faith was so firmly attached to God like a very strong adhesive.
Ruth was a woman like an egg that becomes even stronger in a boiling pot of water and a coffee bean that turns the hot water into fragrant coffee. He held on to only the Almighty God in all adversity and triumphed, and eventually enjoyed the glory of being included in the ranks of the physical ancestors of Jesus, the Savior of mankind.
There is a proverb in English: “Tough times never last, tough people do.” It means that tough times never last long, but tough people do. Many people have faith, but when tough times come, not everyone overcomes the tough environment with faith and maintains their faith for a long time. Some people easily succumb to tough times, while others endure and triumph in tough times. In this sense, Ruth’s unyielding faith in overcoming tough circumstances presents a great lesson and challenge to all of us who live in tough times today.
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5).
