12 Rules for leader

1. Be diligent.
Never be unemployed. Never be triflingly employed. Never while away time, nor spend more time at any place than is strictly necessary.
2. Be serious.
Let your motto be, ‘Holiness to the Lord.’ Avoid all lightness, jesting, and foolish talking.
3. Converse sparingly and cautiously with women, particularly with young women.
4. Take no step towards marriage without solemn prayer to God and consulting with your brethren.
5. Believe evil of no one unless fully proved; take heed how you credit it. Put the best construction you can on everything. You know the judge is always supposed to be on the prisoner’s side.
6. Speak evil of no one, else your word, especially, would eat as doth a canker; keep your thoughts within your own breast till you come to the person concerned.
7. Tell every one what you think wrong in him, lovingly and plainly, and as soon as may be, else it will fester in your own heart. Make all haste to cast the fire out of your bosom.
8. Do not affect the gentleman. A preacher of the Gospel is the servant of all.
9. Be ashamed of nothing but sin; no, not of cleaning your own shoes when necessary.
10. Be punctual. Do everything exactly at the time. And do not mend our rules, but keep them, and that for conscience’ sake.
11. You have nothing to do but to save souls. Therefore spend and be spent in this work. And go always, not only to those who want you, but to those who want you most.
12. Act in all things, not according to your own will, but as a son in the Gospel, and in union with your brethren. As such, it is your part to employ your time as our rules direct: partly in preaching and visiting from house to house, partly in reading, meditation, and prayer. Above all, if you labour with us in our Lord’s vineyard, it is needful you should do that part of the work which the Conference shall advise, at those times and places which they shall judge most for His glory.

어느 한순간도 일하지 않고 보내는 시간이 없게 하십시오. 결코 단 한순간도 그런 시간이 없도록 하십시오.
결코 시간을 낭비하지 마십시오.
절대적으로 필요한 시간, 필요한 장소, 필요한 일에 매달리지 않은 순간이 단 한순간도 없게 하십시오.

진지하십시오.
하나님을 향한 거룩함이 당신의 동기가 되게 하십시오. 사소하고 가벼운 모든 일들, 농담이나 어리석은 대화들을 피하십시오.

여인들과 특별히 젊은 여인들과 사적으로 만나서 대화 나누는 것을 가능하면 피하십시오.
4.
결혼을 할 때는 하나님과 독대하는 기도없이 추진하지 마시고 먼저 그 계획을 나에게 알려 주십시오.
5.
다른 사람의 악한 행위에 대해서 섣불리 믿지 마십시오. 당신이 직접 그 일을 눈으로 보기 전에는 그것을 믿는 것에 항상 신중하십시오. 모든 일에서 최선의 결론을 끌어내십시오. 판사는 언제나 죄수 편이어야 함을 당신도 알고 있습니다.

다른 사람을 험담하지 마십시오.
그렇지 않으면 특별히 당신이 하는 말은 암종처럼 당신 자신의 마음을 좀먹는 존재가 될 것입니다. 당사자에게 직접 말하기 전까지는 당신의 마음과 생각을 가슴속에 지켜 두십시오.
7.
단순하고 명확하게, 그리고 가능하면 빨리 그에게 문제가 있다고 생각되는 점을 모든 사람들에게 말하십시오. 그렇지 않으면 그것은 당신의 마음을 곪게 할 것입니다. 당신 가슴 속에 있는 분노의 불을 최대한 빨리 밖으로 표출시키십시오.
8.
귀족인양 하지 마십시오.
당신이 춤을 가르치는 사람이 아니듯이 당신은 귀족이 아닙니다. 복음을 전하는 설교자는 모든 사람들의 종인 것입니다.
9.
죄 외에는 어떤 것에도 수치스러워하지 마십시오.
시간이 허락된다면 나무를 하거나 물을 긷고, 이웃의 신을 닦는 것과 같은 허드렛일 하는 것을 수치스러워하지 마십시오.
10.
시간을 엄수하십시오.
모든 일을 정확한 시간에 하십시오.
되도록 우리의 규칙을 고치려고 하지 말고
먼저 지키기를 힘쓰십시오.
진노하심을 입지 않기 위해서가 아니라
양심에 거리낌이 없도록 그렇게 하십시오.

영혼 구원하는 일 외에 당신이 해야 할 다른 일은 없습니다. 따라서 오직 이 일에만 온전히 모든 시간을 보내십시오. 그리고 항상 당신이 필요로 하는 사람들에게 가지 말고 당신을 가장 필요로 하는 사람들에게 가십시오.
12.
모든 일을 자신의 뜻대로 하지 말고 복음 안에서 자녀된 자답게 행동하십시오.
더욱이 당신의 시간을 우리가 지시하는 대로 보내느냐는 당신 자신의 몫입니다.
설교와 심방에 시간을 보내면서도 독서와 묵상,
기도에 시간을 보내기도 해야 합니다.
무엇보다도 당신이 주님의 포도원에서 동역하고자 한다면 당신은 우리가 그분의 영광을 위해서 가장 최선이라고 판단하는 때와 장소에서 우리가 권고하는 사역의 부분을 맡아서 담당해야 합니다.
