[Joshua 2:1 – 2:14 ] (Hymn 484)
1And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. 2And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.
5And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” 6But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. 7So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. 8Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9and said to the men, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.
10For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. 11And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign 13that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the LORD gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”
1눈의 아들 여호수아가 싯딤에서 정탐꾼 두 사람을 보내며 일렀다. “가서, 몰래 그 땅을 정탐하여라. 특히 여리고 성을 잘 살펴라.” 그들은 그 곳을 떠나, 어느 창녀의 집에 들어가 거기에서 묵었다. 그 집에는 이름이 라합이라고 하는 창녀가 살고 있었다. 2그 때에 여리고 왕은 이런 보고를 받았다. “아룁니다. 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 몇 사람이 오늘 밤에 이 모든 땅을 정탐하려고 이곳으로 왔습니다.” 3여리고 왕이 라합에게 전갈을 보냈다. “너에게 온 사람들 곧 네 집에 온 사람들을 데려오너라. 그들은 이 온 땅을 정탐하려고 왔다.” 4그러나 그 여인은 두 사람을 데려다가 숨겨 놓고, 이렇게 말하였다. “그 사람들이 저에게로 오기는 했습니다만, 그들이 어디서 왔는지 저는 알지 못합니다.
5그리고 그들은 날이 어두워 성문을 닫을 때쯤 떠났는데, 그들이 어디로 갔는지 저는 알지 못합니다. 빨리 사람을 풀어 그들을 뒤쫓게 하시면, 따라잡을 수도 있을 것입니다.” 6그러나 그 때는, 그 여인이 그들을 지붕으로 데리고 올라가, 자기네 지붕 위에 널어놓은 삼대 속에 숨겨 놓은 뒤였다. 7뒤쫓는 사람들이 요단 길을 따라 나루터까지 그들을 뒤쫓았고, 뒤쫓는 사람들이 나가자마자 성문이 닫혔다. 8정탐꾼들이 잠들기 전에, 라합은 지붕 위에 있는 그들에게 올라가서 9말하였다. “나는 주님께서 이 땅을 당신들에게 주신 것을 압니다. 우리는 당신들 때문에 공포에 사로잡혀 있고, 이 땅의 주민들은 모두 하나같이 당신들 때문에 간담이 서늘했습니다.
10당신들이 이집트에서 나올 때에, 주님께서 당신들 앞에서 어떻게 홍해의 물을 마르게 하셨으며, 또 당신들이 요단 강 동쪽에 있는 아모리 사람의 두 왕 시혼과 옥을 어떻게 전멸시켜서 희생제물로 바쳤는가 하는 소식을, 우리가 들었기 때문입니다. 11우리는 그 말을 듣고 간담이 서늘했고, 당신들 때문에 정신을 잃고 말았습니다. 위로는 하늘에서 아래로는 땅 위에서, 과연 주 당신들의 하나님만이 참 하나님이십니다. 12내가 당신들에게 은혜를 베풀었으니, 이제 당신들도 내 아버지의 집안에 은혜를 베푸시겠다고 주님 앞에서 맹세를 하시고, 그것을 지키겠다는 확실한 징표를 나에게 주십시오. 13그리고 나의 부모와 형제자매들과 그들에게 속한 모든 식구를 살려 주시고, 죽지 않도록 우리의 생명을 구하여 주십시오.” 14정탐꾼들이 그 여인에게 말하였다. “우리가 목숨을 내놓고라도, 약속한 것은 지키겠소. 우리가 한 일을 어느 누구에게도 일러바치지 않는다면, 주님께서 우리에게 이 땅을 주실 때에, 우리는 친절과 성실을 다하여 그대를 대하겠소.”
✍️Who is God like?
Thinking & Understanding
Joshua sent two spies to Jericho. Rahab, the prostitute, sent away the soldiers who had come to arrest the spies, and she helped the spies escape (vv. 1-7). Rahab did this because she had faith in God’s plan (to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites). Rahab revealed that fear had fallen upon the people of Jericho, and requested that her family be saved when the Israelites invaded Jericho. The two spies promised to do this (vv. 8-14).
여호수아는 정탐꾼 두 사람을 여리고 성에 보내고, 기생 라합은 정탐꾼을 체포하러 온 군졸을 따돌리고 탈출을 돕습니다(1-7절). 라합이 그렇게 한 것은 하나님의 계획(하나님이 이스라엘에게 가나안 땅을 주실 것)을 믿었기 때문입니다. 라합은 여리고의 모든 백성이 두려움에 떨고 있다는 사실을 알리며, 이스라엘이 여리고 성을 점령할 때 자신의 가족을 구해달라고 부탁합니다. 이에 정탐꾼들은 라합에게 그 부탁을 들어주겠다고 약속합니다(8-14절).
✍️Who is God?
Vv. 8-11 God encouraged his people through another person’s confession of faith. Given the circumstances, the Israelite spies should have been the ones shaking with fear but, through Rahab, God assured them with the knowledge that great fear had fallen on the people of Jericho. Through what words spoken, and by whom, is God encouraging our faith? Who might God desire to encourage through us?
다른 사람의 믿음의 고백을 통해 백성을 격려하십니다. 사실 이스라엘 정탐꾼들이 두려움에 떨어야 할 상황인데, 라합을 통해 오히려 여리고 백성들이 큰 두려움에 빠져 있다는 사실을 알려주셨습니다. 하나님은 누구의 어떤 말로 내 신앙을 격려하실까요? 또 하나님은 나를 통해 누구를 격려하길 원하실까요?
✍️What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 4-7 True faith is revealed through action. At times, this might involve risking one’s life for the sake of God’s Kingdom, just like the spies and Rahab. What kind of risks are we taking for the sake of God’s Kingdom?
참 믿음은 행동으로 나타납니다. 때로는 정탐꾼들이나 라합처럼 하나님 나라를 위해 위험을 무릅쓰는 일을 감당해야 할 수도 있습니다. 나는 하나님 나라를 위해 어떤 위기를 감수하고 있습니까?

Lord, help us to discern your will amid the multiple choices before us, and guide us towards the choice that allows us to obey your will.
