One Who Understands the Meaning of Tribulation

The Apostle James teaches that a “complete person”—one who lacks nothing and is fully mature and perfect—is none other than a person who has fully exercised the virtue of “patience” (James 1:4). The value of patience cannot be overemphasized. For anyone striving to live a life that is both upright and true, patience is an essential spiritual virtue that must be learned and mastered. Many people today claim that talent is paramount; they advise us to seek out tasks we are naturally good at, arguing that this is the only way to achieve victory in life. However, no matter how exceptional one’s talents may be, they are of no avail if one fails to learn this particular virtue—namely, patience. We frequently encounter cases where a person’s extraordinary talent, left unanchored by patience, serves only to plunge that individual into even greater misery.
Terms such as “gold spoon” and “dirt spoon” have become popular idioms in our society. These expressions critique a social climate in which one’s future life trajectory can be predicted from the very moment of birth. Yet, even if one is born with a “gold spoon”—the child of wealthy or influential parents—and grows up never knowing material want, one will inevitably fall into unhappiness without the virtue of patience. Conversely, there are many who, despite being born with a “dirt spoon,” choose to view their material scarcity as a precious opportunity to build a truly blessed life.
Patience is not something that can be purchased with money. It cannot be inherited from one’s parents, nor can it be borrowed from a friend. It is a virtue that one must learn and cultivate personally, allowing it to permeate and become an integral part of one’s very character. Generally, patience is forged through tribulation—that is, through suffering. Patience is something acquired only after passing through a tunnel of significant pain and waiting. Because the Apostle Paul understood this better than anyone else, he declared that he rejoiced in his tribulations. This means that when tribulation strikes, rather than agonizing over it or struggling desperately to escape it as quickly as possible, he actually rejoices in it. He does so because he knows precisely what tribulation brings about.
When one overcomes tribulation, a spiritual strength known as patience is cultivated within one’s character. Those who possess patience are able to bring their hopes to fruition. Those who realize their hopes, dreams, and prayer requests are the ones who endure and wait patiently; they refuse to give up, and—even if the progress is slow—they continue to move forward, one step at a time. For those who possess faith, tribulation is an opportunity. That is why they rejoice in it.
Devotional Question: Do you understand the true significance of tribulation, and do you hold a firm conviction regarding it?
Prayer: O God, we give You thanks, even in the midst of tribulation. We believe that tribulation serves to cultivate within us both patience and hope. Yet, we still lack the strength to put this belief into practice. We ask that You pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us. Please grant us Your help and guidance so that we may faithfully live out and obey the truths we have come to know. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

환난의 의미를 아는 사람

온전한 사람, 조금도 부족함이 없고 완전하고 성숙한 사람이란 다름 아니라 ‘인내’를 충분히 발휘한 사람이라고 야고보 사도는 가르칩니다(약 1:4). 인내의 가치는 아무리 강조해도 부족함이 없습니다. 인생을 바르고 참되게 살고자 하는 사람이라면 반드시 배워서 익혀야 하는 영성의 핵심 덕목이 바로 인내입니다. 한해 사람들은 재능이 중요하다고 말합니다. 그래서 자기가 잘할 수 있는 일을 찾으라고 합니다. 그래야 인생에서 승리할 수 있다고 합니다. 그러나 아무리 뛰어난 재능이 있어도 이것을 배우지 못하면 아무런 소용이 없습니다. 이것은 바로 인내입니다. 인내를 배우지 못해서 그 뛰어난 재능이 도리어 당사자를 더욱 비참하게 만드는 경우를 우리는 자주 접합니다.
우리 사회에 금수저, 흙수저라는 말이 유행입니다. 태어날 때부터 미래의 삶을 예견할 수 있는 세태를 꼬집는 말입니다. 그러나 부자나 영향력 있는 부모를 둔 금수저로 태어나 물질의 부족함을 조금도 느끼지 못한 채 자란다 해도 인내하지 못 하면 불행에 빠집니다. 마찬가지로 흙수저로 태어났더라도 오히려 그 부족한 것을 복된 인생을 위한 기회로 여기는 사람도 많습니다.
인내는 돈으로 살 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 부모에게 상속받는 것도 아닙니다. 친구에게 빌릴 수 있는 것도 아닙니다. 오직 스스로 배우고 익혀서 인격에 스며들어야 합니다.
대개 인내는 환난, 즉 고난을 겪으면서 형성됩니다. 상당한 아픔과 기다림의 터널을 통과하면서 얻게 되는 것이 인내입니다. 그것을 누구보다 잘 알고 있는 사도 바울이기에 환난을 즐거워한다고 말합니다. 환난이 왔을 때, 고통스러워하면서 빨리 빠져나가고 싶어서 몸부림치는 것이 아니라 그것을 즐거워한다는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 환난이 무엇을 가져다주는지 알고 있기 때문입니다.
환난을 이겨내면 인내라는 영적인 힘이 그 인격 안에 형성됩니다. 인내를 가진 사람은 소망을 이루어 냅니다. 소망, 꿈, 기도 제목을 이루는 사람은 참고 기다리면서 포기하지 않고 더디더라도 한 걸음 한 걸음씩 앞으로 나아갑니다. 환난은 믿음이 있는 사람에게는 기회입니다. 그래서 즐거워합니다.
묵상질문: 환난의 의미를 알고, 그것에 대한 확신이 있습니까?
기 도: 하나님, 환난을 당할지라도 감사합니다. 환난이 인내와 소망을 이루어 줌을 믿습니다. 그러나 우리에게는 여전히 실천할 힘이 부족합니다. 우리에게 성령을 부어 주옵소서. 아는 것을 아는 대로 지켜 행할 수 있도록 도와주시고 인도해 주옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
