Pilate, who knew that the charge of treason by the Sanhedrin was merely an excuse to kill Jesus and that Jesus has been delivered to him out of envy, tried to release Jesus by using the custom that allowed the release of one prisoner (vv. 15-18). However, when the crowds, who had been instigated and urged by the elders and chief priests, violently opposed this, Pilate, fearing a riot, delivered Jesus to be crucified (vv. 20-26).

📚Who is God?
Vv. 15-26 God released the criminal Barabbas from the sentence of death, but like a criminal himself was crucified on the cross.
