Half Time of Life

Our lives are like a life of addition. We keep getting older, getting grayer, accumulating material possessions, houses becoming one, two, three-bedroom, cars becoming one, two, three-bedroom, knowledge growing, degrees increasing, friends growing, children growing—everything is added, and we love this life of addition.

From high school, college, and graduate school, we only kept adding to our academic credentials through degree studies. So, we didn’t realize we were subtracting. But now, as we enter the half time of our lives, we feel something is missing. Hair is falling out, teeth are falling out, speed is falling out, health is falling out, confidence is falling out, pride is falling out. The pride that once only added to us is now gone, and we see nothing but our small selves standing before the Lord.

So now, subtraction is more enjoyable than addition. And only now do I see the Lord. When I was present, when I was growing, when I became arrogant, the Lord was hidden because of me. But now, I see the true face of the Lord, pouring water into a basin and washing the disciples’ feet. And the faces of my brothers and sisters come to mind. Now I see Jesus and my brothers and sisters within me. The Lord’s compassion and heart, the Lord’s joy and first love, have been restored. I vaguely understand that this is what it means to experience joy in the Lord. The world and I are gone, and only the Lord who redeemed me is visible. And our lives become a lifelong praise and testimony of the grace God has given us.

“Because I rejoice in the Lord, the storm of my heart is calm. The world and I are gone, and only the Lord who redeemed me is visible. This is my testimony, this is my song of praise. As long as I live, I will continually praise my Savior.”

Now, from the lowest of places, I praise God who resides in the highest. With a humble heart, I look upon the souls of my brothers and sisters. Instead of criticizing and condemning my brothers and sisters, I began to serve and love like Jesus, who humbly washed the feet of his disciples.

As I pass the halfway point of my life, I realize how beautiful it is to transition from a life of rushing toward success (a successful life) to a life of calling and mission (a significant life). This is because it is the life the Lord desires.
