When the Cross Feels Too Heavy<\/p>\n

\nKey Verse: \u201cIf anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.\u201d (v. 34)<\/p>\n
Most of us do not wake up in the morning ready to take up our cross with a joyful heart. On the contrary, we often feel tired, fearful, and already overwhelmed by our existing responsibilities. When someone else\u2019s suffering calls out to us, our first reaction may not be compassion, but hesitation. We ask ourselves: Can I truly handle this? Do I have the time and emotional capacity to spare?<\/p>\n
Frederick Buechner realized that his greatest temptation was not cruelty, but rather a retreat into comfort. It was the impulse to remain within his safe and comfortable space whenever someone was in need of him. This temptation is familiar to us as well. We convince ourselves that we are too busy, too exhausted, or that surely someone else will step in to help instead. Beneath the surface of these excuses, there often lies a hidden sentiment: a sense that we are not, in fact, particularly remarkable people. It is a self-doubt that questions whether we are truly capable of offering anything of value to others.<\/p>\n
Jesus does not call only those who are brimming with confidence and fully prepared. He calls ordinary people\u2014people who would much rather avoid discomfort. To “take up one’s cross” does not simply mean enduring personal inconvenience or hardship. It signifies a life in which one chooses love over self-preservation\u2014a choice that inevitably comes with a cost. The cross draws us out of our comfortable places of retreat and leads us into the very heart of the world, where God is already at work.<\/p>\n
Lent reminds us once again that following Jesus is not a path designed to make us comfortable. Yet, it is precisely in that place\u2014amidst service, sacrifice, and solidarity\u2014that we experience a deeper peace. This is not a peace born of comfort, but a peace that stems from the knowledge that our lives are being spent on something truly meaningful.<\/p>\n
Devotional Question: Where is God calling me to be, even when I feel unprepared or inadequate?<\/p>\n
Prayer: Christ Jesus, we often choose safety over service, and comfort over compassion. When the weight of the cross feels too heavy, and when we feel that what we have to offer is insufficient, meet us there with Your grace. Grant us the courage to follow You, even at a cost, and help us to discover true life within Your love. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.<\/p>\n
