The Story of a Rookie Pastor Who Had Too Much Sleep

A novice pastor, who had previously served as an associate pastor, was appointed to a church as a senior pastor.

However, the most difficult thing for him was the dawn prayer.

Conscious of his frail constitution and dealing with his troublesome children every day, waking up early in the morning proved difficult.

He often tried to attend the dawn prayer, but his body often refused to cooperate.

Especially because his home was quite far from the church for various reasons, he had to wake up at 4 a.m. to attend the dawn prayer service, which began at 5 a.m.

Still, he had heard so many stories of pastors getting into trouble for skipping the dawn prayer service that his stress level was excruciating. Strangely, whenever he was late for the dawn prayer service, someone would call him on his cell phone or call his home to wake him up. But that never happened.

It was a snowy winter day.

When he opened his eyes that day, too, the dawn prayer service had already ended. I lay back down, feeling self-reproach, when I sensed someone cautiously pacing back and forth in front of the house.

After the footsteps had died down, I went outside and found a warm bowl of Ssanghwatang and two Urusa pills.

Later, I learned that the deacons had prepared these for the pastor, worried about him missing dawn prayer.

And on other occasions, the deacons had even forbidden him from calling, saying, “Pastor, you’re tired, and we shouldn’t wake you up.”

From that day on, no matter how difficult it was, the pastor couldn’t help but give his all.

No one rebuked him, but their love melted his heart more deeply than any rebuke.

Now, with gray hair, the pastor still remembers that church.
