/>
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day,

“The day we see the truth and do not speak, that is the day we begin to die.”
– Martin Luther King Jr. –

As I reread his words, I recalled my own past choices.
I once knew the truth but chose not to speak it.

The reason was simple.
I feared conflict, worried about hurting someone, and above all, feared disrupting the peace.
That truth had the power to shake a person’s reputation, character, and the entire position they had built.
I didn’t have the confidence to bear that weight.

So I chose silence.

That silence, on the surface, created peace.
Nothing happened, relationships were maintained, and the community remained quiet.
But it wasn’t the same within me.
An inexplicable heaviness remained in my heart, like an unspoken sentence.

Martin Luther King Jr. said,
“The day we see the truth and do not speak, that is the day we begin to die.”

This sentence directly confronted my time of choosing silence.
I couldn’t help but ask myself:
Am I truly alive, or am I quietly compromising and fading away?

I didn’t remain silent to bring someone down.
On the contrary, I wanted to protect people, preserve relationships, and maintain the community.
But he said again,

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

At that moment, I realized
that silence is not always neutral, and sometimes it’s a choice that prolongs the problem.

If I speak the truth, someone will be hurt.
Someone will lose trust, and perhaps a person’s life will experience an irreparable upheaval.
Faced with that fear, I still hesitate.

So I ask myself again today. Is speaking the truth an act of justice, or another form of violence?

Martin Luther King Jr. said this about it:
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

Truth only gains meaning when it is spoken not when it is easy, but when it is most uncomfortable.
That is the clearest lesson I have learned through this statement.

I have not yet reached a complete conclusion.
I still stand between truth and silence.

But one thing is clear:
I no longer want to live as someone who remains silent without thinking.

I don’t want to fight.
I don’t want to bring anyone down.
But I also don’t want to choose a life of peace that comes at the cost of losing my conscience.

What Martin Luther King Jr. left us was not a complete answer, but an unending question.
Where do you stand now?
Will you choose comfortable silence, or uncomfortable truth?

I still stand before that question.

But today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I want to confess this one thing:
I want to be remembered not as someone who ignored the truth, but as someone who grappled with the responsibility of facing the truth.

And if the moment to speak the truth ever comes,
I want to speak it not for division, but for reconciliation,
not for condemnation, but for healing,
not with anger, but with the language of love.

He said:
“Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

The same is true for truth.
Truth spoken with anger becomes a sword,
but truth spoken with love becomes a force that heals society.

Silence can sometimes be an act of courage.
But silence that ignores the truth is ultimately just another choice to avoid responsibility. Today, I am quietly preparing for the day when I can speak the truth in that way of love.

January 19, 2026
Yoon Young-sil Silvia pattern
Former Asian Advisory Committee Member to the Governor of Virginia

편안한 침묵과 불편한 진실 사이에서 (Between comfortable silence and uncomfortable truth) “우리가 진실을 보면서도 말하지 않는 날, 그날이 바로 우리가 죽기 시작하는 날이다.” “The day we see the truth and do not speak, that is the day we begin to … Continue reading →

[1,12

post-37741","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","category-12
["GET
